Put a 301 from /main to home page, now I'm panicking
-
Hi,
Our website is 10 years old, but I only noticed last night we had a https://curveball-media.co.uk/main page which has some badly formatted copy on.
I redirected (301) to the home page https://curveball-media.co.uk/
Then I had a slight panic that maybe this was the wrong thing to do and it should be like it was with the home page and the /main page.
Should I have left it or did I do the right thing?

@BlueprintMarketing
Thanks, exactly what I was looking for. Really thank you very much -
/main if it was identical or the same copy as the homepage yes you made the right decision by using that 301 redirect
there are no back links to /main the only advice I have is I would've done the redirect via server-side or on a reverse proxy like cloudflare.com method two of three cloud flare method three of three cloud flare
this tool fastly is my favorite however it is not as simple as cloudflare fastly.com rather than Yoast simply for site speed reasonsStatus Code URL IP Page Type Redirect Type Redirect URL 301 https://curveball-media.co.uk/main 185.96.67.126 server_redirect permanent https://www.curveball-media.co.uk/ 200 https://www.curveball-media.co.uk/ 185.96.67.126 normal none none

@emilie-martin Thank you! I think my badly worded question was more about whether Wordpress should have a /main page as well as the / home page. If that makes sense?

@curveballmedia Hi there, it completely depends on what you want to do with the page! It is common practice to redirect one URL to another. When doing this, it is critical to observe best practices in order to maintain SEO value. A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect that passes full link equity (ranking power) to the redirected page. In most instances, the 301 redirect is the best method for implementing redirects on a website.
You can read more about best practices for redirects here.
Another useful resource is this blog post, where Cyrus Shephard writes about rules of 301 redirects.
I hope this helps.

Will URLS With Existing 301 Redirects Be as Powerful As New URLS In Serps?
Most products on our site have redirects to them from years of switching platform and merely trying to get a great and optimised URL for SEO purposes. My question is this: If a product URL has alot of redirects (301's), would it be more beneficial to me to create a duplicated version of the product and start fresh with a new URL? I am not on here trying to gain backlinks but my site is tn nursery dot net (proof:)

Blog article cannibalizes our home page
Hello there, We're having a rather big SEO issue that I’m hoping someone here can help us with, perhaps having experienced the same thing or simply understanding what's going on. Since around June, our website's home page has lost the majority of its most important rankings. Not just dropping, but losing them entirely and all at once. We think it was self-inflicted: Almost at the same time, a blog article of ours (which we had recently updated) started ranking for almost all the same keywords. While our home page is a commercial page highlighting only our own product, the article that usurped the position is a comparison article, comparing our own solution to competitors. The reason we created that article is because we noticed a trend of Google increasingly favoring such comparison articles over dedicated product pages. But of course we didn’t plan to cannibalize our own home page with it. My question is whether anyone has experience with such a case? Is there a way to "tell"/influence Google to rank our home page again, instead of ranking that article? Thanks a lot, Pascal

Does link equity to a page that is 301'd to a new domain pass juice on?
If we build some quality inbound links to certain pages, that are a later date 301'd to another domain, does any equity or juice get transferred across? Or is the inbound link's value wasted? Thanks

History about 10 days a go I went google web master tools and noticed that there were a large number of errors due to the fact the robots could not crawl our site. Looked at the site and found that Privacy button on WP was turned to block robots. I turned it on and had google re crawl the site, looked like google was not able to crawl the site for about 3 months, on Monday I did a 301 redirect to on of our other sites for another product we sell, to http://isolatorfitness.com/6-pack-bags. This site had a good bit of back links would doing all this at one time cause this How do I determine if we did anything wrong Thanks0
