Does content have a shelf life for link building efforts?

Do you think that content (that doesn't have a date attached) has a shelf life? Especially content that is effectively timeless such as a quiz?
I've noticed in my link building efforts that most links are achieved within the first couple of weeks, and that there seems to be a point of diminishing returns. Why do you think that may be?

what causes it? There are new web sites popping up all the time. And existing sites are already out there with new content on those all the time as well.
While some content, specifically that classified as "evergreen" deserves to be found, the task of determining what older content deserves to remain high as compared to other content is extremely difficult - far from perfect.

You can attempt to recycle content to try and squeeze more links out of it. For example if you have quiz you could update it with new questions or if say you have written an e-mail cheat sheet you could update it every year to reflect changing techniques and technologies.
You could also look to promote old content in response to new events. An example would be a company who have written an article on steps you can take to prevent your phone being hacked. At present the UK news is dominated by a phone hacking scandal by one of the newspapers, there couldn't be a better time for the companies article to build some links if they can promote it properly.

it's the freshness factor. Unless we find way to promote such content on a longer-term scale, it's going to be diminishing returns. It's one of the reasons Google wants fresh content.

I'm in the process of launching two new websites (redesign / rebrand) - one website represents the manufacturer while a second website represents the retail side of the manufacturer (same company essentially but two different brands). The sites have co-existed historically without worry of canibalizing the other's traffic, but I want to make sure in this redesign that we're all set. I'm curious if anyone has any recommendations on how to handle two sites with different branding but VERY similar content (product descriptions are essentially the same). I was thinking it could be smart to just no follow the content on the manufacturers site since we're just trying to drive traffic to the consumer-facing retail side mostly anyway but would love to hear from the experts! Outsourcing content creations
I am using odesk for outsourcing content creation, but i am finding it difficult to hire quality contractors. I am trying to use the fix rate is this is the main reason for getting low quality response for my job openings. Does quality contractor on Odesk prefer hourly rate? Is hourly rate is safe for client? Some of the contractors i hired has provided me the plagiarism content. I am keen to use Odesk for outsourcing but really getting nowhere with this. I always scrape content from article directories and make it unique through TBS with copyscape passed but i still want to know will google detect the content is not unique.. Blog and Website = 2 different URL's - Is it WORTH to merge content on to one site
Good day Mozzers! A friend of mine recently asked for my help in regards to online marketing. While getting familiar with his online presence, I realized that he has a blog hosted under a completely different URL Main Site = http://pardons.org/ (page rank 4)

It has over 280+ blog posts spanning over a few years, so there is A LOT of content that could benefit his main site. However is it worth it, or should he continue to run everything as 2 different sites? Also, of you suggest moving the content over, what would be the best way to do it in your opinion? He currently has links on his blog TO his main site, so there is a little bit of link juice there, but with a average of 300 views a day, he only get about 10 clicks to his main site from the blog. How can I rank using translated content?
My friend has a website with similar content to mine, in a different language however. He has allowed me to translate his content if I link to it every post (can be nofollow). Does Google penalize me for clearly translated content? How can I make sure it ranks well? BTW, if I convince him that I don't link to him, is it better SEO-wise? Best,
