What is considered to be great quality content for e-commerce websites?
-
Hi there,
At the moment I am building an e-commerce website selling a bunch of iphone accessories. I have been aware that great quality content is one of the most important factors for a site to stand out in the list of search results especially when it comes to google's latest panda update.
I was wondering what is considered to be great quality content for e-commerce websites? It would be great if you could share some ideas about how to build/create fantastic content for e commerce websites.
Many thanks!

Own Data:
Use data you have and nobody else does and write it using variables into normal human language acompanied with some pretty and easy to understand data charts (Set in tabbed view to prevent interfering with call to action elements).:
Examples:- Price trends
- Brand trends
- Best sellers
- Product purchase patterns (also bought...)
- Emerging products
- Most talked about
-
Basics: Product Description.
The chance is that everyone will use same manufacturer-supplied product descriptions and specifications. Go through the trouble of rewriting to provide better descriptions in language users will understand and relate to. It's a big process so start from most important products and work your way down. -
Encourage user-generated content (Reviews, quick like/dislike)
-
Use of relevant news feeds and social streams for that product or brand
-
-
That's a good point actually - having content pages shows you know what you're talking about and a blog gives your company a personality or 'face' - be sure to use social media to enhance this effect.
-
Great content means beating the info sites.
So, go out to visit the best content sites in this niche and decide where you will beat them.
Content sites usually clobber retail sites in the SERPs so the best way to sell is to defeat them on one topic after another.
These content pages will pull traffic and links and social activity.
Plus they will feature your deep expertise. People believe and like to buy from experts.
-
When did I say that the site should be low in quality? I actually agreed with you and said that the sites quality is important but I don't believe many will be link to general product pages.
You certainly won't rank in a competitive industry like that without having some kind of onsite linking strategy in place - whether it be a blog, content area etc
-
I disagree with you on this one. The Panda update is mostly (but not only) about long tail content - e.g. product pages. This means that all pages on the website need to be of high quality, not just a blog.
-
All your points are important, but I believe his question was addressing content ideas for SEO; you're not going to get many people linking to product pages unless they are good enough to get in CSS and design 'show off' sites.
-
A blog is good for some sort of content, but people are not going to put your blog in the cart.
I'd recommend focusing on the product pages, making sure they:
- Are well designed
- Have all the necessary specs
- Have high resolution pictures
- Honest user reviews (probably the most important)
- Maybe a possibility to ask questions about the product
Best,
Thomas

Firstly, I'd add a blog. All businesses should have a blog these days for a varitey of reasons, and it is a great place to publish link bait.
I would also consider adding a content section that has information about phones, technology etc. Here are a couple of ideas:
-
app reviews
-
iphone skin reviews
-
technology news (fresh content)
Be creative!

Canonical Homepage Multi-language Website
Hello, Our development department is building a multi-language webshop.
On-Page Optimization | | X-com_Maasbree
Due to the multi-language module that they've used, we have example.com and example.com/nl having exactly the same content. In order to avoid duplicate content, those pages have the following canonicals:
1. example.com -> Canonical to example.com/nl
2. example.com/nl -> Canonical to example.com/nl Do I loose SEO-value by not canonicalising directly to the root-domain homepage (example.com)?0 -

Duplicate content question
Hi I have a site that is run off one CMS system but has 3 different web addresses. One is a comic shop, one is a toy shop and one is a game shop. Now due to the nature of what we are selling some of the products we are selling on both or all 3 of the sites. I was wondering as to whether this would affect my ability to rank in google and if i would be penalised for any duplicate content? Thanks in advance

Internal Linking From Blog to Website
Hi all, I'm just seeking opinions on something an external company have told us about linking from our blog to our website... Our website is; www.XYZ.com and our blog is www.XYZ.com/blog I add content to the blog on an almost daily basis and generally link on average 3 times from the blog (internally) to a various relevant pages on our website. Today I was told that by doing this I am 'diluting' the link juice which I understand but don't agree with... All I am doing is a form of internal linking which as far as I am aware is a good on-page technique? Just curious to learn other people's view on this... Many thanks Andy

What to do with old content in light of the Panda update?
Let's say you operate a laptop review website. After several years, the individual product review URL's (like site.com/dell/xp1234-review/) aren't receiving much traffic, they may have a few links here and there. In general and considering the panda update, would the best option be to 301 the old URL's back to the category page (site.com/dell/)or just keep them where they are? Any potential issues like having excessive 301's which could slow down the site or appear fishy to search engines?
