What is the best practice for optimizing international websites? We operate a .co.uk and .com and obviously content is similar.
-
We have two (and soon to be more) international websites, all in English. The sites in question are WebHostingBuzz.com and WebHostingBuzz.co.uk. Obviously content is similar as we're providing a similar service but from different locations and different prices.
What is best practice here? Should we completely re-write the .co.uk content (this is the newer site) so it isn't penalized for scraping?
Any hints/tips would be appreciated.

Thanks David - much appreciated. We'll definitely be trying these.

Thanks Ryan! Cheers for the compliment

I really enjoyed your response David. I am learning aspects of international SEO and your reply really hit home for me. I never thought of changing the language code from EN to GB.

Hi Matt,
International SEO is always a fun question, especially when dealing with English speaking countries. Here's what I would do to help Google determine that this is a separate site and hopefully avoid any duplicate content issues - this will be specific to your UK site but the practice is universal:
-
List the UK phone number and address + any other specific UK contact info on every page (header + footer). The great thing is that you're already using the phone number and your registered business number in England. If it's ok with how you conduct business, I would also include the address in the footer as well
-
Change the HTML lang code to GB. Currently in the .co.uk source code you have: xml:lang="en" - what you need to be doing is specifying UK English like so: html lang="en-GB"

-
Double check webmaster tools for the UK site is targeting the UK
-
Ideally, you would want to change some of the text content to reflect differentiation between the English sites. I would simply paraphrase or rewrite the content from the American version and place it on the UK site.
-
If you see the .com version in the UK, don't panic. You'll need to build some links to the UK site ideally from .UK domains(co.uk, org.uk) and it should naturally sort itself out.
-
Something I've been wanting to try is the html link language tag. In this case it would work from the .com version link pointing to the .co.uk. W3 says it's not supported by browsers but doesn't mention crawlers - IMO it's worth a try if all else fails.

If you follow these instructions you should be fine, I mean apple.com and apple.com/uk are almost completely identical and they seem fine now. I haven't had any issues myself yet, and I've taken my own advice.
On a side note, I think I might become a customer - plans look pretty sweet
Good luck!
Dave

Hello Moz Community, I am designing my slider for 'SliderRevolution' on Illustrator. I wish to know the optimal resolution for a homepage slider - both for page speed and for resolution quality. I am using a full-width slider and would just like to know any SEO techniques you guys have used when designing your slider. Not reducing page speed is my main priority here. *Bonus points if you can help with SEO techniques and the slider.

Duplicate Content: Snippets from Blog on Website
Our company has a website and a blog, each on a separate domain. On our website's home page, we include snippets from some of our blog posts and links to such posts. The snippets include the same photo, title, and first line or so of text. We have been told and am concerned that search engines will categorize this as duplicate content. Any recommendation as to how we can get around this issue aside from not including the blog posts on our site? I imagine we are not the first company to want to do this. www.angelicolaw.com Thanks,

Spanish version of site - best practice?
I need to create a Spanish version of an existing site. My idea was to have the Spanish content switch out the English content if the query string had something like ?l=es. It would also drop a cookie so that all other pages would switch out content as well. I do want the Spanish content to be indexed and rank in the search engines, though. I would include all of the Spanish versions (with the ?l=es) in the site map and link to them on every page with a link to the Spanish version. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is this a bad idea? Thanks! Tom

Static content VS Dynamic changing content what is best
We have collected a lot of reviews and we want to use them on our Categories pages. We are going to be updating the top 6 reviews per categories every 4 days. There will be another page to see all of the reviews. Is there any advantage to have the reviews static for 1 or 2 weeks vs. having unique new ones pulled from the data base every time the page is refreshed? We know there is an advantage if we keep them on the page forever with long tail; however, we have created a new page with all of the reviews they can go to.

What is the best way to integrate our blog into our ecommerce website?
Hi all, We run an eCommerce website at www.oursite.com plus a blog (including news / articles / reviews / how-to guides etc.) at blog.oursite.com (those aren't really our site URLs, BTW ;-). For SEO reasons previously discussed on here, and for ease of use for our customers / browsers, we now want to integrate the two more closely. This will mean: Our blog will move to www.oursite.com/blog We will try to feature the blog content in places where it is relevant to customers (so e.g. news and blog posts about shoes would appear on our shoes category page, a review of some Adidas XL1000 shoes would appear on the Adidas XL1000 shoes product page) The blog is currently run on a wordpress.com site, so we'll need a new CMS (or wordpress.org) to get more control of the data. My issues are that, although it's good from a users point of view, having blog articles appear in lots of different places on the site might cause issues with duplicate content from a search engine's point of view. Has anyone got any pointers on how to integrate the two in a way that will make most use of the good original content coming out of our blog, while not "watering it down" by spreading it around too much? Can anyone point to examples of shops that do this well? Is there any software (other than Wordpress) that people would recommend using? As always, any help greatly appreciated! Alex
