How to Add Content to a Product-Focused Site
-
I recently took over management of the SEO work for the following site: http://www.grovercorp.com/rings-and-seals/. I want to do link building, but don't have a ton of experience with it.
From what I've read, offering linkable content is the best way to get links. However, this site -- like many in industrial B-2-B -- is focused primarily on promoting their products. I'd like tto offer an article or add an infographic, but am not sure where I would put it? It doesn't seem like the architecture offers a good place to add linkable content.
Anyone have thoughts or suggestions?

All good points. I've had a similar experience dealing with e-commerce sites like this and figuring out where/how to add content. I think you start with your products. Make each page as detailed and descriptive as you possibly can. This means everything from how the product is made, where it's made, it's uses, etc (all original copy if you can write it). Then add multiple pictures, possibly different angles, maybe even packaging. Then, one of the biggest things, add customer reviews. That's user generated content that people WANT to read when looking at an online store. The goal is to provide the customer with as much information as possible. Almost as if they are in a store, holding the product, asking a salesperson questions. Put it all out there for the user to see, and you're off to a great start. Here's an older, yet still useful, whiteboard friday by Rand from about a year ago on the subject.

Consider posting detailed article pages that enthusiastically show how to use your products with lots of photos, graphics and maybe video. Create some showing the benefits of using your products. These should not be chest-thumping content, instead friendly and generously informative.
Promote them across the site with "Learn How To Use This Product" links or images.
These detailed pages might attract links. They can boost your credibility. People will use them as reference documents. Make them easily printable for use offline.

a very quick review of your site showed some promise. you have a section for case studies etc.. you can use case studies to garner industry expertise and link build from that.
Another great way to start adding content to any type of website is a blog. if you were to add an industry specific blog to the site you could quickly start conversations with your b2b customers. Remember to provide industry specific news and thought stewardship and you can help link / content build very quickly. From there you can run some social twitter, fb, etc. and hopefully start growing links from that. personally I dont see much room on fb for my b2b, but i still see a lot of growth on twitter.
one last thought is to work with your happy customers to provide back links or cross links to start building out some good linking techniques..
just a quick .02 Im sure others will have some great ideas too

I am in a similar situation. Your best bet would be a blog or something similar covering industry news or company related information, such as new features or similar. Also guides or so could be one source. It is difficult for this kind of website though to release content without it seeming out of place.

Links in product UI
We have a SaaS product that places a UI on our clients' websites. The UI often includes a link back to us. Think Live Chat (it's not, but the idea is similar) where the chat UI has a link "Live Chat by CompanyA". But our solution is not hosted - it's part of our customers' page. Our customers are big, enterprise companies (e.g., American Express). Does this provide any value in terms of inbound linking? Would it introduce Penguin risk to have the product name as an anchor text link (think "Live Chat by CompanyA" with Live Chat as the link)? Are there considerations I should think about? We're updating our standard UI, so it's a good time to make sure our SEO strategies are sound here.

How do you optimize your site for surrounding areas?
For example, If I am optimizing a site for a dentist in West Palm Beach, Florida (the primary city) how do I ensure I am also optimizing my site for the smaller cities/towns that are part of West Palm Beach like Royal Palm Beach, Wellington etc.? If I am using "West Palm Beach" in my site and page titles etc., how do I also rank for the smaller cities? What are the basic tactics in terms of on-site and linking? For instance, lets say I offer Botox in West Palm Beach...how do I also optimize for Wellington, Royal Palm Beach and other local cities? Do I really have to create unique Botox content for each city? Thanks!

Blogs that Link to Random Sites
Posting articles on the MyBlogGuest article gallery can lead to several sites offering to publish your guest post on their blog. However many of these sites will accept any guest post that links out to anything from socks to hotels. Would you avoid guest posting on these sites? (if it would take very little time to do)

Should you guest post on a site with no quality links?
Suppose a site is related to your industry and has a relatively good domain authority of 49. However when you look at their link profile it is mostly directories and they don't seem to have any natural links from quality sites. Would you still take the link if they offered to publish your guest post?

Linking strategy between my own sites
Hi, I have one main site, let's call it food.com I also have 10 smaller sites, let's call them mexicanfood.com, indianfood.com, italianfood.com etc food.com is on its own separate dedicated server the 10 smaller sites are all on a shared IP in hostgator I don't want Google to think that I have created the 10 sites for only purpose of creating links to each other. So, would you recommend that all those 10 sites link to each other? or should there be no interlinking within those 10 same IP domains? What about linking from those 10 sites to my main site? How should I structure my own backlinks not to get penalized by Google ?

When rebuilding a site, when should you start building links?
We are in the process of completely rebuilding our web presence. We went ahead and started a blog using Hubspot while we are redesigning everything and writing all new content. The new site will be live in early August. The question is when do we start making a big push with Linkbuilding? I am currently trying to promote the Blog but I'm wondering about linkbuilding for the rest of the site? Do we wait until the new site is live or do we start doing it now? The new site will be completely different from the old site?
