  • Hi all, When it comes to local SEO in 2015, I appreciate that having a physical location in the town/city you wish to rank is a major factor. However, if you're a national brand is it still possible to rank for local searches when you're based in one location? The reason I ask is that, although our service is national, the nature of what we offer means that it is not inconceivable that people would search for a local variation of our top keywords. Other than the standard things - location in the content, the H1/H2s, title tag, meta description, url etc. - is there anything national businesses can do to help? Thanks in advance. John

We created a new page and we would like to see it into the resultat when the visitor is searching for our branded keywords. Thank in advance for your support. gQ0JhuH.jpg.

  • Hello! I am kind of new to SEO and MOZ, so I really need your help to understand why some of my keywords generate duplicated content. Meaning, in my blog posts I use various SEO keywords. It shows up that in my MOZ crawl analysis, I have these keywords listed as duplicates: so two/three different keywords are pointing to the same articles and are considered duplicates? I really don't understand how it is possible. Did it also happen to you? I highly appreciate it. Thank you

  • Hi there MOZ community.  I am new to the QandA and have a question. I have a blog Its been live for months - but I can not get the posts to rank in the serps.  Oddly only the categories rank.  The posts are crawled it seems - but seen as less important for a reason I don't understand.  Can anyone here help with this? See here for what i mean. I have had several wp sites rank well in the serps - and the posts do much better. Than the categories or archives - super odd. Thanks to all for help!

  • I currently work as an SEO/SEO in training. Oftentimes I get projects that require me to look at well established websites of big brands, the kind one would assume put a lot of effort into their sites, and make SEO changes. Additionally they want "actionable" changes that can be made on the fly so content creation, and most linkbuilding, is usually out of the question. Does this limit me to just changing meta titles and descriptions? What if all that seems alright too?

  • Okay something I am struggling with Using YOAST - but have a recipe blog - However the category archives have /are being optimized and indexed as I am adding custom content to them , then listing the recipes below. My question is if I am indexing the Category Archives and using these to add custom content above - then allows the recipe excerpts from the category to be listed underneath - will these recipe excerpts be picked up as duplicate content?

  • We moved our site over a couple of weeks ago from bi-mi.com to bimi.co  - its a magento site. We followed instructions to wait 2 weeks and upload a coming soon page etc to help google realise it was not just a parked domain. We moved everything over and then set a hta record up to redirect the "bi-mi" base domain to "bimi" , we then logged teh site move within web master tools also and I set the bimi.co preferred url etc. However its been about a week and half now and the DA is still showing as 1 and bi-mi (the old site that is redirecting) is showing as 18 Is it just patience needed here or have any of you also come across this issue?

  • Just checked my Crawl insights. I have 1981 on Moz 302 redirects - temp I'm not too familiar with Magento - however site domain has moved from .com to .co and although I have set a 301 redirect on the base domain through hta I am assuming it is also temporary redirecting things in the CMS itself? The temporary directs that the site is creating are still on the new domain - but are really odd! Eg Wishlist, Product compare links .co/wishlist/index/add/product/498/form_key/5e7CQkZ54tMSsJtwAnyone have ideas in regards to this?

  • Hi everyone, got a quick question in regard to our Facebook page and its appearance on the Google SERP. We have individual Facebook pages for every country and language. Unfornately the UK site is ranking in the German SERP rather then our Germany Facebook Site. The UK site is way older and has much more likes which most likely explains why this page is (still) outranking our, fairly new site (couple of months). Is there a way, to push my German Facebook Site in front of the UK Site in Germany? Any advice or tipp is much appreciated. Thanks

  • Hi Moz Community! I've been working with a client’s website for about a year now. They were hit with the original Panda/ Penguin update because of some spammy links. We have analysed and disavow sapmmy links edit anchor tag and landing pages. We've made a decent climb back while working on it keywords ranking was improved some of them are from out of 500 to top 30, but not a full recovery. There are some weird things happening that I would love some insight into. 1. Ranking for keywords are again dropping and traffic is gone: I notice keyword ranking is dropping and some of the keywords which are on 2 and 3 page, now on 9th page. And also traffic is down. Any help would be appreciated! Regards, S

  • Hi Moz Community! I've been working with a clients website for about a year now. They were hit with the original Panda update because of some spammy links from a shady SEO firm. We've made a decent climb back but not a full recovery. There are some weird things happening that I would love some insight into. 1. Ranking for keywords we don't optimize for: I noticed some low keyword volume for a keyword term that is close to our main term, but is slightly different. We don't optimize for this term at all on our website. We rank third for this term, and actually show site links in the result, which doesn't happen for any of our other pages. 2. Index not found when doing site: search: Other oddity is that when you search site:www.mywebsite.com, I see all the pages within the site except the homepage. Not sure whats going on here, but when I fetch the homepage in GWMT, it returns the homepage. When you query the homepage by itself, it also ranks. Any help would be appreciated! Regards, J

  • Hello, If a company is in different countries and has same content in most of the countries does it hurt SEO? For Ex. fibaro.com is the website that I am researching and I have seen the indexed pages to be about 40,000 however there is not much content on it. On further inspection I noticed that for every country the sub folder is different. So for us it will be fibaro.com/us/motion-sensor and for Europe fibaro.com/en/motion-sensor. Now both of these pages have same content on it and the company is in 86 countries so imagine the amount of duplicate content it has. Does anybody have any ideas on what should be an ideal way to approach this? Thanks

  • Hello, fellow MOZers. Here is the question: Is there any benefits/disadvantages of having pages, grouped by common type of service, to be put into subfolder with keyphrase-friendly phrase? Example: We have website https://www.hyperlinksmedia.com/ and several services under "SEO" niche, such as: SEO (page name seo-houston.php) Social Media Marketing (page name social-media-marketing-houston.php) Email Marketing (page name email-marketing-houston.php) So, is it better to have these pages in root directory like this: https://www.hyperlinksmedia.com**/seo-houston.php** https://www.hyperlinksmedia.com**/houston-social-media-marketing.php** https://www.hyperlinksmedia.com**/email-marketing-houston.php** OR is it better to group them in subfolder "houston-seo-services" for "extra" keyword and convenience reasons like this: https://www.hyperlinksmedia.com/houston-seo-services/seo-houston.php https://www.hyperlinksmedia.com/houston-seo-services/social-media-marketing-houston.php https://www.hyperlinksmedia.com/houston-seo-services/email-marketing-houston.php Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks!

  • I have a site that has had a few problems over the last year.  We had a manual penalty in late 2013 for bad links, some from guest blogs and some from spammy sites.  Reconsideration requests had me disavow almost all of the incoming links. Later in 2014, the site was hit with link injection malware and had another manual penalty.  That was cleared up and manual penalty removed in Jan 2015.  During this time the site was moved to SSL, but there were some redirect problems. By Feb 2015 everything was cleared up and a an updated disavow list was added. The site recovered in March and did great.  A mobile version was added in April. About May 1st rankings dropped again.  Traffic is about 40% off it's March levels. Recently I read that a new disavow file will supersede an old one, and if all of the original domains and URLs aren't included in the new disavow file they will no longer be disavowed.  Is this true?  If so, is it possible that a smaller disavow file uploaded in Feb would cause rankings to drop after the May 3 Quality update?  Can I correct this by disavowing all the previously disavowed domains and URLs? Any advice for determining why the site is performing poorly again?  We have well written content, regular blogs, nothing that seems like it should violate the Google guidelines.

  • Hi all, Our site is build on Wordpress and formerly the post URL's had the typical date format at the beginning. This made it easy for me to look at, for example, all search traffic to the blog. I would just view URL's containing /2014/ and /2015/ and boom. We have since removed the dates from the URL's with proper redirects etc, which is great, but now I can't figure out a way to look at ONLY the blog in GA. I like to track a KPI of 'search visits to blog posts' and I can't figure out how to now. Can I set up a GA event that only fires when the post type template for blog posts loads? Some other solution? I'm lost here, and there's gotta be a good way to do it...

  • Hi fellow SEO-ers! One of the sites I'm responsible for uses a Twitter or Facebook feed on most of their pages, next to their unique content. As the tweets (twits?) and comments in some of these feeds are old, they still refer to the old Twitter and Facebook-domains using http (instead of https). These links are all automatically 301-redirected, but still make up ca. 9% of the links on the site. Do you think that this affects SEO? I doubt it, because I suppose that Google has seen this many times and understands that these links are still pointing to the same content. Although my client is prepared to write a script to auto-update all these links, I think it won't make a difference. What do you think? Thanks for your feedback!

  • It seems that the more links I get the lower my DA is. My DA has been dropping for some time now as I gain more backlinks. It also does not seem to pick up anywhere close to the number of domains that is linking to my site. My url is hiddentriforce.com GWT says I have over 600 domains linking in. The majority of the links are from news or articles that we cover which other sites pick up and link to us as the source. We also have a ton of scholarship links from .edu and education sites from a giveaway that we do every year for students. Why does OSE seem to lower my DA the more I get off-page factors to the site?

  • Link building is the hardest aspect that we, and I'm sure most SEO companies, deal with. I've been looking into a company called Linkredible (https://linkredible.com) that provides link building services that are supposedly pretty "natural." Their explanations and service descriptions all seem to make sense, but I definitely don't want to do anything that could cause link penalties for my clients. Has anybody used this company or any similar services that could give me some input?

  • Webmaster Tools correctly identifies the query strings/parameters used in my URLs, but still reports duplicate title tags and meta descriptions for the original URL and the versions with parameters. For example, Webmaster Tools would report duplicates for the following URLs, despite it correctly identifying the "cat_id" and "kw" parameters: /Mulligan-Practitioner-CD-ROM
    /Mulligan-Practitioner-CD-ROM?cat_id=87
/Mulligan-Practitioner-CD-ROM?kw=CROM Additionally, theses pages have self-referential canonical tags, so I would think I'd be covered, but I recently read that another Mozzer saw a great improvement after disallowing all query/parameter URLs, despite Webmaster Tools not reporting any errors. As I see it, I have two options: Manually tell Google that these parameters have no effect on page content via the URL Parameters section in Webmaster Tools (in case Google is unable to automatically detect this, and I am being penalized as a result). Add "Disallow: *?" to hide all query/parameter URLs from Google. My concern here is that most backlinks include the parameters, and in some cases these parameter URLs outrank the original. Any thoughts?

  • Morning all, I've started a pretty aggressive Video content push in recent weeks. All our videos are on our YouTube channel. I decided to go with hosting the videos on YouTube based on my research on moz.com, especially considering the potential reach of the content on YouTube. What I'm finding is that the YouTube channel is doing great. We've hit 200 subscribers and 15K views in a little under a month. Wayyyy more than I could have ever hoped for. But the blog posts on our website are getting minimal traffic and no search visibility. That doesn't necessarily bother me, since the intention of our marketing campaign is to use YouTube to drive traffic to our website. So I guess my question is really more to do with optimizing the site with Video Sitemaps and best practices for Google Webmaster Tools. Right now we have YouTube videos embedded on blog posts like this one that have a time-stamp. But I've been working to create Gallery-style pages (no time-stamp) which would have multiple YouTube videos embedded on them like this one. These make it easier for visitors to watch multiple videos without needing to skip around to multiple blog posts. The challenge I'm running into is that when I go to submit a Video Sitemap to GWT I get an error saying that I have duplicate page content within the video sitemap. I've used several WP plugins to do this. It seems that when there is a video embedded on multiple URLs (pages + posts) the plugins will ignore the posts and only add the pages to the video sitemap. Here is my regular Sitemap Here is my video Sitemap I've attached a screenshot of my current Yoast Video SEO config if that's useful for reference. Does anyone have experience with using multiple sitemaps in GWT? I'm starting to think that maybe I shouldn't even bother with a video sitemap. Maybe those gallery-style pages should just go in the regular sitemap? Any thoughts or advice would be highly appreciated! Thanks llQfydA

  • Hey Mozzers!
We're going to be moving are main company site from http://whiteboardcreations.com > https://whiteboardcreations.com and wanted to get some of your quick tips for items we need to consider. We are working on a new web redesign now and keeping in WordPress. A couple facts for your info... We have read a lot about it, but wanted to get some quick tips we need to take into account from your points of view. 1. March 2010 domain age
    2. Ranks very well locally for our targeted keywords around web design, WordPress, SEO, social media, blog writing, web maintenance
    3. Not many of our competitors, especially the SEO competitors, have moved to HTTPS
    4. Site is hosted at WP Engine
    5. Going to be purchasing a Domain Validated SSL... Is there any advantage to an Extended Validated SSL in Google's eye/mind?
    6. Should we expect rank decrease or increase?
    7. Anything else we should expect or prepare for from your experiences? Thank you!

  • I am relatively new to Adwords, and I can't figure out why the Adwords section of Analytics is showing all my site visitors at 0% bounce rate.  Does that mean the account connection is not done right?  Obviously Google ads are not a 0% bounce rate. If I can't get that to work, does anyone know how Google ads appear in Traffic?  Is it Direct or Referral? I'm sure there's some simple answer I'm just not aware of, I would appreciate anyone's help. • I'm seeing a large amount of duplicate page titles, duplicate content, missing meta descriptions, etc. in my Crawl Diagnostics Report due to URLs' query strings. These pages already have canonical tags, but I know canonical tags aren't considered in MOZ's crawl diagnostic reports and therefore won't reduce the number of reported errors. Is there any way to configure MOZ to not consider query string variants as unique URLs? It's difficult to find a legitimate error among hundreds of these non-errors.

  • I work for a company that recently acquired another company and we are in the process of merging the brands. Right now we have two website, lets call them: www.parentcompanyalpha.com www.acquiredcompanyalpha.com We are working with a web development company who is designing our brand new site, which will launch at the end of September, we can call that www.parentacquired.com. Normally it would be simple enough to just 301 redirect all content from www.parentcompanyalpha.com and www.acquiredcompanyalpha.com to the mapped migrated content on www.parentacquired.com. But that would be too simple. The reality is that only 30% of www.acquiredcompanyalpha.com will be migrating over, as part of that acquired business is remaining independent of the merged brands, and might be sold off. So someone over there mirrored the www.acquiredcompanyalpha.com site and created an exact duplicate of www.acquiredcompanybravo.com. So now we have duplicate content for that site out there (I was unaware they were doing this now, we thought they were waiting until our new site was launched). Eventually we will want some of the content from acquiredcompanyalpha.com to redirect to acquiredcompanybravo.com and the remainder to parentacquired.com. What is the best interim solution to maintain as much of the domain values as possible?  The new site won't launch until end of September, and it could fall into October. I have two sites that are mirrors of each other, one with a domain value of 67 and the new one a lowly 17. I am concerned about the duplicate site dragging down that 67 score. I can ask them to use rel=canonical tags temporarily if both sites are going to remain until Sept/Oct timeframe, but which way should they go?  I am inclined to think the best result would be to have acquiredcompanybravo.com rel=canonical back to acquiredcompanyalpha.com for now, and when the new site launches, remove those and redirect as appropriate. But will that have long term negative impact on acquiredcomapnybravo.com? Sorry, if this is convoluted, it is a little crazy with people in different companies doing different things that are not coordinated.

  • Hello Folks at MOZ, I am new here and I am glad there's this section of the site where newbies can get help for SEO. I have a specific keyword which needs to rank as well as possible, and all other keywords, well they are automatically in the description text alt tags and in couple of page titles. So my keyword which I would need to rank as high as possible is "24k gold iphone 6" and it has quite lot's of searches per month, and my site is now one second page of google results. My question is: I don't care much about other keywords right now, so would it make sense to make on one or two pages which sell the 24k gold iphone of my website the title, the page url, headers, alt tags, image names, to be exactly "24k gold iphone 6" and /24k-gold-iphone-6.html etc. without any other text. I believe there is a difference in having exact same page title name etc as the keyword, without any additional text is good for ranking? Also I guess there is limit on how much this naming of files, titles etc can be used before google might give a penalty for it... so I guess I have to be careful. Many thanks for anybody who takes time to respond.

  • Dear all, I would very much like to have your advise about whether or not to implement bulk 301 redirects. We have 3 retail websites with the same technical architecture, namely: Netherlands-example.nl Belgium-example.be France-example.fr These three websites are all bilingual, namely: Netherlands-example.nl/nl Netherlands-example.nl/fr Belgium-example.be/nl Belgium-example.be/fr France-example.fr/nl France-example.fr/fr We’re going to do a CMS update and therefore we have to change a bulk of 301 redirects: Part 1: For France (France-example.fr) URL’s in the Dutch language (France-example.fr/nl) will be redirected to Belgium (Belgium-example.be/nl). It’s a matter of about 8.000 redirects. Part 2: For the Netherlands (Netherlands-example.nl) URL’s in the French language (Netherlands-example.nl/fr ) will be redirected to Belgium (Belgium-example.be/fr). It’s also a matter of about 8.000 redirects. Question:
What will be the best way to implement these redirects? Fully implement part 1 first (8.000 redirects) and then a couple of weeks/months later a full implement of part 2? Or will it be better to implement small batches like 200-500 per 2 weeks? I’d like to hear your opinion. Thanks in advance. Kind regards, Gerwin

  • Hi Mozzers, This may be a bit of a n00b question and i feel i should know the answer but alas, here i am asking. I have a page  www.website.co.uk/page/ and im getting a duplicate page report of www.website.co.uk/Page/ i know this is because somewhere on my website a link will exists using the capitalised version. I have tried everything i can think of to find it but with no luck, any little tricks? I could always rewrite the urls to lowercase, but I have downloadable software etc also on the website that i dont want to take the capitals out of. So the best solution seems to be finding the link and remove it. Most link checkers I use treat the capitalised and non capitalised as the same thing so really arent  helping lol.

  • Hi Mozzers, I am expanding a website internationally. I own the .com for the domain. I need to accommodate multiple countries and I'm not sure if I should build a folder for /us/ for United States or just have the root domain .com OPTION 1:
    domain.com/page-url -- United States
    domain.com/de/page-url -- Denmark
    domain.com/jp/page-url -- Japan OPTION 2:
    domain.com/us/page-url -- United States
    domain.com/de/page-url -- Denmark
domain.com/jp/page-url -- Japan My concern with option 2 is there will be some dilution and we wouldn't get the full benefit of inbound links compared to Option 1 as we would have geo ip redirection in place to redirect users etc. to the relative sub-folder. Which option is better from an SEO perspective? Cheers, Jeremy

  • I'm looking at running a campaign to get a site ranking for terms that include "near me" so for instance, "personal trainers near me", "yoga lessons near me" I'm wondering if this should be a local campaign because of the the "near me" in the term and Google basing results on IP addresses of the searcher (if that's possible possible instead of town names) or will it come down to words on the page including "near me" Any help or examples would be hugely appreciated, thanks community!

  • I was been ranking on page no.3 for many of my keywords. Suddenly they all dropped to Page No.9& Page no.10. Now 10 days back one of my keyword got back to page no.4 & now suddenly today it went back to page no.9 again. I haven't done any changes to the site. My page speed is less than 4secs. Checked everything & all seems fine. No errors or manual actions notification in Webmaster too. Should i wait for the rankings dance to get over or should i start doing something. Currently i am planning to get fresh pages with good content added to the website for the whole month of July. Suggest me what to do?

  • I have a backlink on a very popular sports news site PR5 this is a sitewide link. The link is near the top on righthand side. As you scroll down, the page keeps loading more and more information. According to my Google webmaster tools the link is on the site over 21,400 pages. As the stories being submitted are new most of the pages have no PR however there are around 30-40 categories that have PR ranging from 0-4. According to my AHREFS account on a daily basis it picks up between 100-200 new links with on average around 10-20 being lost as the stories are being removed. Would anyone advise I just ask for my link to be on the category pages only or should I leave it as it is? Many Thanks in Advance for any Feedback.

  • Hi, I manage this WordPress website http://www.the-fireplace-company.co.uk I've been looking for ways to improve the product template and have come up with the following http://www.the-fireplace-company.co.uk/product/the-alhambra-fireplace/ - you can see how this compares to the old template http://www.the-fireplace-company.co.uk/product/the-burlington-fireplace/ Basically I've moved the description copy for the product from the main body to an alternative field and disabled the reviews tab below the product images to give a more compact feel and better use of the space available in my humble opinion! The client approves too. However I was just about the change all the other products to match this one - but suddenly thought is is wise to move all text out of the main body just to improve the look? I wondered what impact this might have on search. Any pointers would be welcomed. One course of action might be to find a new theme that's just a little more accommodating! Or to develop this theme further to ensure the main body copy is displayed where I want it to be? Regards to the Moz community - thanks for reading. Nathan

  • As all other marketeers do I follow closely my keywords, one particular keyword has ranked continually at #2 and has suddenly dropped to +#60, but all others remain the same. We are a fairly large site in terms of numbers 9m views annually, could it be possible that someone has black hatted that particular keyword, and if so how do I find out how and more importantly who?
