  • Hello Moz! I just subscribed for your Moz Pro program. Amazing stuff! On open site explorer, I found a number of links to my site from a page called with a very high page authority and high domain authority, but also a high spam score (8 or 9, one with a 10). I say multiple spam scores, because it's strange, there are what appears variations of the same url, and each one is considered a link.  For instance, there's an abc.linkstomysite.com and xyz.linktomysite.com, and 123.linktomysite.com... there are about 15 of these (all with the spam scores mentioned above)! This must have been some old SEO work done I payed for back in the prehistoric SEO days. However, my fear is the following: Removing these links, and then losing some potentially strong link juice.  I don't have many high DA or PA links to my site, and these are some major ones. The domain in question "linktomysite.com", when entered into OSE, only has a spam score of 4, and it has a domain authority of 45 and page authority of 37.  My site has a spam score of 2 and no messages from google regarding a penalty, but an overall reduction in google traffic over the years (just keeps slowly dropping... as if a weight is pulling me down?) What do you think, should I leave, or remove?  The linkstomysite page is just a LONG page full of links, with short descriptions, nothing of value, but with a an old domain age (relatively). Most important for me is keeping at least some ranking/visibility, while I personally work on building quality links and helpful content. thanks!

  • Hi Guys I run daily and weekend horoscopes on my site, the daily horoscopes are changing every day for obvious reasons, and the weekend horoscopes change every weekend. However, I'm stuck in how the pages need to be structured.  I also don't know how I should go about creating title tags and meta tags for content that changes daily.  Each daily and weekend entry creates a new page. As you can see here http://bit.ly/1FV6x0y you can see todays horoscope.  Since our weekend horoscopes cover Friday Sat and Sunday, there is no daily for Friday, so it shows duplicate pages across Friday, Sat and sunday.  If you click on today, tomorrow and weekend all pages showing are duplicate and this will happen for each star sign from Fri, Sat Sun.  My question is, will I be penalized doing this? Even if the content changes? How can I optimize the Title Tags and Meta Tags for pages that are constantly changing? I'm really stuck on this one and would appreciate some feedback into this tricky beast. Thanks in advance

  • I have been doing SEO for years, but luckily have never had a client penalized or had to go through that.  I see everyone talking about it at conferences and know the absolute basics of recovery, but just had someone come to me that was algorithmically penalized about two years ago.  They have no actual data to show me a date and they couldn't tell me a specific date.  According to them, their SEO disappeared and wouldn't give them access to the analytics.  They are definitely showing just about every red flag with anchor tags and low trust links and tons of duplicate content.  Just about everything.  I realize you don't have the deep data to go by, but are there cases when it is just better to start over from scratch. They have literally thousands of bad links and strange site pages that they say they weren't even aware of. Whether they were or not I guess isn't the point now, but I have heard rumors that if you start over, Google will still figure it out and follow you with the penalty.  Is this true or documented?  Don't want to potentially recommend that if that is something that generally happens to bad offenders.  Happy to do the work and try to resolve their issues, but it is a lot of work and is going to be expensive and want to present other options.  Thanks and any thoughts suggestions are appreciated.

  • Hey guys, My site is Netspiren.dk and when I use a tool like Screaming Frog or Integrity, it only crawls my homepage and menu's - not product-pages. Examples

A product: http://www.netspiren.dk/pi/All-Omega-3-6-9-180-kapsler_1412956_57699.aspx Is it because the products are being loaded in Javascript?

  • Just that really - we're getting on average around 80% online enquiries, and 15% calls. Calls convert better so would prefer calls. What steps would you put in place to increase calls? Ours is a lead generation site - we're a mortgage broker. So far we have a click to call button on the quote page which loads on mobile devices and doesn't display when the call centre is shut. We get traffic from organic and PPC. I'm trying to come up with a bit of a plan to address this. Thanks, Amelia

  • Hello, I have a question related to Geotargeting.
    Let's suppose I have a website: mysite.co.uk
As far as I understand Google will consider this site targeted for the UK and will appear on searches preferentially from the UK. What happen now if I have a person located in Spain (with a Spanish IP) and searching in Google.co.uk. Will mysite.co.uk still appear in searches? What are the factors that Google takes into account for Geotargeting? Thank you

  • My company made a branding decision to use lowercase for all of our title tags. This, of course, means that our titles on SERPs are all lower case. Overwhelmingly, it seems that websites use title case. This makes me wonder if we're shooting ourselves in the foot. Does using lower case titles negatively impact our rankings and/or click through rates? Is there any data out there suggesting that title case has a better click through rate than lower case? Thanks for reading!

  • When building very large ecommerce sites, the catalog data can have millions of product SKUs and a massive quantity of hierarchical navigation layers (say 7-10) to get to those SKUs.  On such sites, it can be difficult to get them to index substantially.  The issue doesn’t appear to be product page content issues.  The concern is around the ‘intermediate’ pages -- the many navigation layers between the home page and the product pages that are necessary for a user to funnel down and find the desired product.  There are a lot of these intermediate pages and they commonly contain just a few menu links and thin/no content.  (It's tough to put fresh-unique-quality content on all the intermediate pages that serve the purpose of helping the user navigate a big catalog.)  We've played with NO INDEX, FOLLOW on these pages.  But structurally it seems like a site with a lot of intermediate pages containing thin content can result in issues such as shallow site indexing, weak page rank, crawl budget issues, etc.  Any creative suggestions on how to tackle this?

  • Why is is that when I search "protonmail.ch", sitelinks show for our company. However when you search for "ProtonMail", no sitelinks show, even though our homepage is now on the top result. We've been trying different things to improve the navigational structure of the homepage, such as using the <nav>tag. If you have any thoughts on why sitelinks might not be showing up, we'd really appreciate it! Thank you </nav>

  • My DA has gone down from 29 in February to 13 today. Since then, my site traffic has increased 43.5% (organic by 24.6%), I have cleaned up citations, and worked on directory listings (unpaid listings for both local & national directories, including industry-specific ones). Why the drop-off? I'm concerned.

  • Hey there awesome Mozzers, I have a site that it automatically redirects people by using geolocation ( i know that probably is not good ) to the various languages of the site. I just wanted to know Is 301 or 302 the best option? ( I've heard that for language re-directions 302 is the best case scenario ) My main page for example is www.example.com and it automatically redirects with a 301 to www.example.com/en for any language that is not there. What is the best case scenario? Leave it to redirect to /en or just leave it go to the root page www.example.com.

  • Hello everyone, When you search "ProtonMail", our Login page always ranks #1 while our homepage ranks #2. We're unsure why this is happening. The PA for our homepage is higher than the login page, and the login page itself basically has zero content except for a login form. We don't want to put the login page on robots.txt, we want to do our best to preserve it so that people can login. However it still does not make sense to us how the login page ranks higher, even though it has a lesser PA. I'd appreciate any help or advice you might have. Thank you.

  • Our competitive metrics are good but we need to increase our linking root domains to beat our competitors and climb a few critical positions in the SERPs. We have drawn up a link-building strategy based on Moz's very helpful guide, and begun trying outreach. We're a non-profit and the content we are pushing is blog content like this, in-depth articles like this (which, incidentally, do well in search), and we're also going to start creating more infographics and other types of content to try to generate some traction that way. However, based on the success of the campaign so far, it seems unlikely we'll acquire links at the rate we need to in order to keep up with our competitors, particularly given that we only have three people who can spend time on this (at a total of around 1.5 days per week). Clearly this is something we need to persevere with and integrate into our normal content cycle, but I can't see us picking up more than a dozen or so links a year unless something unexpectedly goes viral! It seems like link outreach is so common that it's very hard even to get link targets to engage with you on social media. People just see it as spam. It would be interesting to hear what other people have done successfully to help us figure our what a realistic approach to link building looks like.

  • We've noticed recently on an E-Commerce website that we manage that PayPal has recently shown a large increase in Referral Traffic on the website. Is anyone having an experience with this and how can we block it? It seems like its counting the traffic that leave to PayPal to complete a purchase and then return to the site as increased traffic. The increase started to occur around April 29, 2015 and I'm wondering if this has anything to do with any recent updates made by PayPal? Any insight or other experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Hi. I am looking into a potential clients SEO issues and reasons why their rankings for specific keywords that they ranked for have dropped but others stayed the same or sometimes have improved. They received a manual spam action that was revoked after some disavow and so on. In May of this year they noticed a huge drop in more generic terms. The main keyword that was ranked 6th, dropped to 35th yet other keywords rose slightly. I have noticed this issue for another potential client as well. They ranked 1st for their brand name, then received a spam action that was revoked. Now they do not rank for their brand name but do for other long tail keywords? Any ideas the best way to investigate this or root out the issue and build to improve rank for more generic keywords? Thanks

  • Hi! I found a niche I'd really like to work on. I was initially targeting a longtail keyword but there are so many available for this niche I decided to just make an authority site instead.  My plan is to have multiple pages with each page targeting a separate long tail keyword in the niche. There's probably going to be over a 100. Let's say for example it's an organic gardening niche.  The website will be setup for the entire niche and the page titles will be structured as such: Best Organic Gardening Soils Best Organic Gardening Tools Best Organic Gardening Seeds I'd prefer it to be setup this way so I can target traffic for the term with and without "best".  I'm wondering if this sounds a bit spammy or is acceptable? Any other ideas as far as targeting similar longtail keywords in the same niche on a single site? Thanks so much!

  • I've been planning to set out on a massive link building campaign for the term 'how to start a business' and I can't decide if it's a good idea or not. (Metrics attached - my site is the last listed and the ones above it are the top ranking for that term) The sites ranking for that terms are on very authoritative domains, but the page link profiles on each of them are poor. This is one of those moments where you think, 'Am I about to waste a tremendous amount of time?' My guide is extremely thorough and I had hoped with a MASSIVE amount of elbow grease outranking pages that had poor content value + only has 4 referring root domains. The problem is, I'm not sure if the powerful overall domain authority would still outrank my newer site. Should I follow through with that general guide or focus on less hard to rank and less searched content? Argh confusion  GB3jcsJ.png?1

  • Just started at a company recently, and there is a preexisting problem that I could use some help with. Somebody please tell me there is a low impact fix for this: My company's website is structured so all of the main links used on the nav are listed as .asp pages.  All the canonical stuff. However, for "SEO Purposes," we have a number of similar (not exact) pages in .html on the same topic on our site. So, for example, let's say we're a bakery.  The main URL, as linked in the nav, for our Chocolate Cakes, would be http://www.oursite.com/chocolate-cakes.asp.  This differentiates the page from our other cake varieties, such as http://www.oursite.com/pound-cakes.asp and http://www.oursite.com/carrot-cakes.asp. Alas, fully indexed in Google with links existing only in our sitemap, we also have: http://www.oursite.com/chocolate-cakes.html http://www.oursite.com/chocolatecakes.html http://www.oursite.com/cakes-chocolate.html This seems CRAZY to me, because wouldn't this split our search results 4 ways? Am I right in assuming this is destroying the rankings of our canonical pages? I want to change this, but problem is, none of the content is the same on any of the variants, and some of these pages rank really well - albeit mostly for long tail keywords instead of the good, solid keywords we're after. So, what I'm asking you guys is: How do I burn these .html pages to the ground without completely destroying our rankings for the other keywords?  I want to 301 those pages to our canonical nav URLs but, because of the wildly different content, I'm afraid that we could see a heavy drop in search traffic.  Am I just being overly cautious? Thanks in advance!

  • Hey all, I recently watched the Whiteboard Friday on Good Unique Content and had a question about how we should approach this from a User Experience perspective. If our goal is to create 10x Content (sounds great, I'm in!) isn't this going to mean that we end up with 5000 words of text in a blog post with no way for the reader to approach the content except to start at the top and work their way down? How does the user know that they've found what they want above the fold if what they want is buried in 10K words of text and images? I'm concerned that I'll need to have some kind of in-post navigation to allow users to quickly navigate to the part of the content that's most relevant to them I've tried to overcome this by creating a sort-of visual 'Table of Contents' at the top of my blog post. But I'm wondering if this is a useful feature for users or whether it will detract from the quality of the content above the fold. Has anyone else run into this challenge when trying to create 10x Content?

  • Using the Mozbar I am analyzing my links and my competitors links.  I am noticing other web developer sites are getting credit/index links from all their client's websites with the "designed by...." link in the footer.  However, for me I only see one "inbound link" in the link analysis report.  Sometimes I notice a company getting several inbound links on one site they built. I have built many other sites and have my company link below on all the footers.  Why are the other sites not showing up as "inbound links" on the link analysis report? Thanks for your help! Nikki

  • We oversee a variety of regional, county, and town level tourism websites, each with hundreds (or even thousands) of places/businesses represented with individual pages. Each page contains a link back to the place's main web presence if available. My fear is that a large portion of these linked to sites are low quality, and may even be spammy. With our budgets there is no way to sort through them and assign nofollows as needed. There are also a number of broken links that we try to stay on top of but at times some slip through due to the sheer number of pages. I am thinking about adding a nofollow to these outbound links across the board. This would not be all outbound links on the website, just the website links on the listing pages. I would love to know peoples thoughts on this.

  • Analyzing a competitor backlink profile I noticed they have the habit of adding multiple links to the guest post/advertorial they get, one link to their site, plus some links to authority site like wikipedia and institutional websites. Is there anyone with some data, testing, and so on, supporting this? I can see their SERP positioning is very good, but they spent a lot of money on quite expensive links, so I don't know if it's the DA of the linking domains or the multiple links making the difference. Anyone has an idea?
