Canonical Question For Different Languages
-
My client has a site that supports different languages in the following structure:
www.domain.com - English version
www.domain.com/IT - Italian version
www.domain/DE - German version
etc....
I have set the languages up within Webmaster Tools but do I need to set up the canonical tag for all internal pages as they are basically the same but just in a different language i.e.
www.domain.com/index.php is the same as www.domain.com/DE/index.php but in a different language.
Thanks

Hi Mark,
I'm checking old Q&A and see yours is still marked as unanswered. Are you looking for more answers or aren't you satisfied with mine and Tom answers? If it is so, it would be great if we can help you further.
If not, it would be great if you could sign the question as answered

When it comes to rel="canonical" and hreflang coexistence, I tend to prefer the self-referential rel="canonical" and not crossing one, also in the case of pages in the same languages.
That's because, in terms of International SEO, localizing a page means also localizing the language, and we know that - for instance - American English and British English have their differences.
Then there can be also other very small but meaningful differences (as phone numbers, currencies et al), so having the UK URL - for instance - canonicalized toward the US one is not correct.
And don't forget that if you canonicalize an URL to another one, but say to Google to show the first one in a given country, then Google will present that URL, but the search snippet will mirror the Title and Meta Description of the canonical URL, which sucks if you have decided to localize the search snippet.
Said that, in the case the content (all the content) of the two URLs is identical, then you can use the cross canonical.

Hi Mark
If the content is in a different language, you won't need to use a canonical that points to one language version of the site. Basically, if the content is different on all of the pages - and by different, this can just mean language and words, rather than content - then you won't need to use a cross-reference canonical, such as having the canonical tag for your DE index page set to www.domain.com/index.php. Provided that the content is "unique" in that sense, you'll be fine. You can still use self referring canonicals of course.
It's well worth reading through the Google Webmaster blog on canonicals and hreflang tags for multi-language sites as well, you can find that here.

Tracking down rel="canonical" on Wordpress site
A rel="canonical" is being added to every page and post on my Wordpress site - not tag results, not category results. Not a major problem, right? Except that I don't know where it's coming from. I've tried tracking it down - change the theme back to a default one, turn off all the plugins - it's still there. Is it coming from .htaccess perhaps? The only issue it is causing is that it has causes me to have to turn off the canonical option in Platinum SEO as that was resulting in two identical rel=canon on each page. It doesn't seem to be causing problem but I'd like to get a better understanding of what it going on.

Best practices when targeting a different country and language completely.
Hi, I have just recently built a shopping site which is targeting users from the UK, built in opencart. Now I want to expand the site and also target customers in Thailand, for Thailand users they will need the site in Thai & English language. I was wondering what would be the best option to do this, taking into account best possible practice V's time involved. As I can see it have only a couple of options really. 1. Add a new language to the existing .com site. This seems to be the easiest and fastest option. 2. Clone the site and launch on a .co.th domain with Thai/Eng text option. Would their be any major benefit ranking wise as to having a co.th separate site. Or any duplicate content potential issues. Bit of a noob so don't be afraid to point out the obvious. I did have search and could only find topics relating to eu languages and GB v US. Is their anything extra that has to be taken into account considering the massive differences between UK and Thai. Thanks you for any guidance, Ian

This is a real dumb question about on page optimization
I've been reading the docs for using this site and am puzzled by the on page optimization reports, and the tactics for creating the reports. In no place can i find that you first must use the keywords you have identified to track in the campaign on pages on your web site. Am i missing something? From just reading how to do your campaign, it would appear that you never have to touch your pages with the keywords you want to track, all 500 of them for one page, if that's what you want to do. Not knowing how the application works, it is possible to imagine anything, including not needing to do the obvious steps of writing a well optimized page first. I want to presume that first you optimize your pages with the keywords you want to track, then go ahead and run your campaign. Although this is the obvious thing, I don't see that part of the seo puzzle being mentioned in any of the docs. Where do i hunt for that part of the equation?

Seriously? where is my first question?! is it deleted?
Did you delete my first question? where is it? I cant find it on My Questions.... And if it is deleted i NEED to know why, i am currently on trial for PRO MEMBERSHIP, and getting my question deleted without any news is definitely not a good idea.... If i did something wrong, i need to know what is it.... (i dont understand , how on this green earth asking a question would be wrong though) Please responds, PS : My Last question was posted on "On-Page / Site Optimization" It asked 3 questions, all related to Search Engine Visibility, and the primary question is about "If i used php script to detect google bot / yahoo bot / bing bot, and then redirect them to page that have EXACTLY same content, but a much more SEO Friendly one, will this effect my seo standing" The website in question is http://atlantagenset.com In which case that website is full flash BUT it can be opened through any phone (I have built a php that detected IF you are coming from any mobile devices, it will redirect you to the right HTML version of that page) arghhhh i have asked the question, and have not got any responds for 6~7 days, and it got deleted??!
