Human Translation versus Google Translate for Ecommerce Products
-
Hi all,
We want to put our products on our ecommerce site into another language.
I have always been under the impression that running text through Google Translate is a no no, not only for the user experience, but also it is a Google tool and I am assuming that Google would notice that it is not translated by a human. I don't know if it would incur a penalty as such but it most likely would not be favoured as a human translation
Can anyone confirm their experience or impression on this?
Thanks!

But beware some translation services based on automated systems that generate content 'almost duplicated', no matter the cost of the company that is hired, but the quality of the result and that these translations incorporating 'an extra' more human.

Thank you everyone for providing your feedback and opinions. As suspected we will be heading down the most user friendly but most expensive way forward... human translation. Tx.

Google translate won't always get the syntax human translation are always better.

Hi,
I'm not sure whether Google will know if it's Google translated but the golden rule is usually be as humanly as possible. Do everything for human eyes; therefore, i would suggest translating your text by a human. By using Google Translate, it might not make sense to your customers and sometimes a word might have 2 or 3 different meaning depending on the context; therefore, a "local" human translator would be the best bet since they'll be aware of any local interpretation and etc.
Regarding to Penalty, i don't think Google will penalize you for using Google Translate, but if your translations don't make sense, you will definitely get a lot of bounce rate which will affect traffic and thus affect your SEO work. I guess that's a penalty.
My 2 cents

I don't know about whether Google would know or not, but your human visitors probably will notice! Computerised translators such as Google Translate are great for translating little phrases when you're on holiday, but I don't think they can compete with using an actual human being. Language has so many nuances, which a human can understand, but a machine can't.
Years ago the BBC Radio 1 breakfast show used to do a competition where you had to work out what the original phrase was that had been translated into another language and then translated back into English. They didn't use Google Translate (I don't think it existed then!) but changed the language settings on a mobile phone (If I remember rightly). The difference between the original phrase and the final phrase was usually pretty funny (hence the competition).
If I was you, I wouldn't want people in other countries laughing at my product descriptions because of a stupid machine.

BJS,
We are a UK company but have different websites for Germany and Spain,
Whilst waiting for translations from our different offices in the past i had tried speed things up and get by with using Google translate for smaller scale text, title tags, descriptions etc, even this has not worked out, once that is fluent in the language reads through the text, they have told me that it usually makes no sense, Google translate doesn't seem to be getting even simple sentences structures right in my experience particularly in German,
I Would highly recommend biting the bullet and paying for translations if it is an important campaign, the quality of your text content would just not be up to scratch,
Just my experience, Hope it helps a little

International Targeting: What Does Google Consider an Equivalent Page?
Hi All, We are working with an international brand that owns several domains across the EU and in North America. Our team is in the process of setting up international targeting using sitemaps to indicate alternate language pages. This is being done to prevent North American pages from being served in the UK, Spain pages from being served in Portugal, or any other combination of possibilities... Currently we are mapping duplicate or “equivalent” pages and defining them as rel="alternate" on their respective sitemaps. The problem is, it’s not always explicitly clear what Google considers “equivalent.” 1. In this instance, URL structures vary by domain,

2. in most cases the content is similar (but unique),
3. the landing page templates vary is design and functionality,
4. and lastly, services often contain nuances that make them slightly different from one another (Professional Liability Insurance vs Professional Indemnity Insurance). All things considered, these pages are offering the same service, but are vastly different (see above). Q: Is it appropriate to use these attributes to serve the correct language / regional URL to searchers? Q: Is there a rule of thumb on what should be considered an "equivalent" page? How can I change the currency Google lists my products with in the SERP?
I.e. This product - http://www.absoluteautomation.ca/fgd400-sensaphone400-p/fgd400.htm - shows up as USD in the SERP. (In the US it just won't show a currency, if Canada it will show USD on the SERP). My pricing is all in CAD, how can I tell Google this? (It knows pricing is CAD in my Google Product Listings/Merchant Center). Thanks!

What is the current thinking about translated versions of pages? Is it necessary
My company is about to do a big push in China. We can get our homepage translated in Chinese at a very reasonable price. My questions are: Is it worth it? Do browsers to an adequately job of translating pages? If it is worth it: Can someone suggest a good post explaining what to do with the translation? What are the SEO implications? Thank you

Are my translated pages damaging my ranking?
Hi there, I have a site in English but with duplicates in different languages. The first problem is that these translated versions of my site receive no ranking on google stars (while the english does) - why is this? The second problem is that SEOmoz counts the errors on my site and then duplicates this error count for all the translated versions of my site - meaning I have a huge amount of errors (too many on-page links). Add this to the fact that I use affilite ID´s to track different types of traffic to my site - so all page urls in english and other languages, with an affiliate id on the end of the url, count as an error. This means I have a huge amount of on page errors indicated by SEOmoz, plus no ranking for my translated pages - I think this is really harming my overall ranking and site trust. What are your opinions on this?

Mini Google Search box within organic sitelinks
I'm trying to find solid information on Google's criteria on showing a "mini Google search box" within sitelinks? Example: if you type-in "wikipedia" on Google.com, a mini search box appears within the site links. This is for organic listing not paid listing. The Google Support page on Sitelinks does not state any info on the mini google search box. http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=47334

Poor Google.co.uk ranking for a UK based .net, but great Google.com
I run an extremely popular news & community website at http://www.onedirection.net, but we're having a few ranking issues in Google.co.uk. The site gets most of its traffic from the USA which isnt a bad thing - but for our key term "one direction", we currently don't rank at all on Google.co.uk. The site is located on a server based in Manchester, UK, and we used to rank very well earlier this year - fluttering about in position 5-7 most of the time. However earlier this year, around July, we started to fall down to page 2 or 3, and at the start of this month we don't rank at all for "one direction" on Google.co.uk. On Google.com however we're very strong, always on page one. We're definitely indexed on .co.uk, just not for main search term - which I find a bit frustrating. All the content on our site is unique, and we write 2-4 stories every day. We have an active forum too, so a lot of our content is user-generated. We've never had any "unnatural link building" messages in Webmaster Tools, and our link profile looks fine to me. Do we just need more .co.uk links, or are we being penalised for something? (I can't imagine what though). It certainly seems that way though. Another site, "www.onedirection.co.uk" which is never updated and has a blatant ad for something completely unrelated on its homepage, ranks above us at the moment- which I find quite frankly appalling as our site is pretty much regarded as the worlds most popular One Direction news and fan site. We've spent the last few months improving the page-load times of our site, and we've reduced any unneccesary internal linking on the site. Approx 2 months ago we launched a new forum on the site, 301'ing all the old forum links to the new one, so that could have had an impact on rankings - but we'd expect to see an impact on Google.com as well if this was an issue. We definitely feel that we should be ranking higher on Google.co.uk. Does anyone have any ideas what the iproblems could be? Cheers, Chris.
