You have NO FREAKIN CONTENT! That why you don't rank. Also, you sent me a PM and I thought it was SPAM because the website was porn at 1st glance. I don't know if it's porn or not, but I didn't want any script to be loaded on my computer.

RE: What can be the cause of my inner pages ranking higher than my home page?
I get WAY more traffic from my landing pages than my home page. If your homepage is not ranking at all, do you have the keyword you are searching for at the beginning of the title tag? Do you have links pointing to that page? There are way too many factors that go into this.

RE: Suggestions for Best SEO tools and extensions for chrome?
Don't over load your browser with add ons. It'll slow down your browser. Disable OR delete the ones you don't use often. I have the MozBar and FireShot. That's it.

RE: Social Sharing Buttons: SEO friendly ?
I use Addthis on my site:
It shows in their analytics as well as GA. The only problem I had with them was that it was slow at 1st. Then I added a script to my header, and my pages started load FAST FAST FAST. I didn't know that Addthis was making them slow in the beginning. I have ass this on almost every page including the blog and a couple ecommerce sites of mine.

RE: Should each domain have it's own social media ?
I have a multi-lingual site with one social account for all 4 languages:English, Spanish, Italian, German. All one Facebook Page.
-
RE: Can social results be downloaded in graph format?
I have ADDTHIS on my site's homepage. Actually it's on every page. It give me analytics and shows me a graph. It even shows up in GA.
edit: Sorry, here's my site. Take a look at the social media buttons. That is Addthis.com.
PS, while you're at it, give me a G+

RE: Geo-Redirection
GWT > site config > settings. geo target www.mysite.com.au to AU.
As for www.mysite.com, leave it "Unlisted" under Geographic target.
This will make the AU site be seen only in AU while the .com shows world wide.

RE: How much does Google take Social into account in serps
I already answered this for someone:
... As far as I know, "Likes" are not part of the ranking factor. But it is more likely that someone who "likes" or "Shares" your info may link to you.Rand wrote a post on this in Ranking Factors...
http://www.seomoz.org/q/facebook-likes
Micacle, get your LIKES and move one to writing great content. Yes social media is important for me, but it's not as important as Adwords or building Referral Sites. Look at GA and find out what is putting more money into your bank account. For me, Facebook/Twitter is NOT bringing in cash like Adwords.

RE: Why links coming from this page are never found? (opensiteexplorer)
Valery, I gave you a thumbs up.
**I have a client in a very niche industry, and probably less than 20% of their backlinks show up in OSE. **
GWT reports 100's more root domains linking to my site while Roger Mozbot only reports about 100. OSE is not by any means perfect, but it serves as competitor analysis.
Alex, don't get lost and only focus on link building. WRITE GREAT CONTENT so other sites want to link to you.
-
RE: Can your site be penalized for changing the url structure and if so how long till you get back?
If you already did 301s, then build links to those pages. Check your GWT and see if they are counting it as a 404. Also submit a sitemap in GWT ASAP.

RE: Grabbing Expired Domains
I have never done a backorder, but I agree with kjay. You can go to GoDaddy and pay for the backorder service. However, I think it's $20.
Maybe you should find where it is registered and ask them.

SEOMOZ Glossary
Does SEOmoz have a glossary of terms. I answer many questions in Q&A and many people don't know what things stand for.
"Uuhhhhh what's GWT?"
"UUUUUhhh who's Matt Cutts?"
"DDuuuhhhhh What GA?"
I think it would be good to have a Glossary. SEObook has one, but I don't want to link from this forum to SeoBook. I want to keep it all in the Moz family of subscribers.
(DDuurrrr, what's a SERP?)
-
RE: What's an inexpensive way to maintain domain registration privacy?
I use Dreamhost and my domains are $10/yr whether or not there is Privacy or not. Just fill in whatever you need to in the fields if you need to or make it private. I have never had an issue with Dreamhost.
-
RE: Do you trust SEOMoz with your Google Analytics data?
I trust them. I highly doubt the will be trying to sell my Analytics information to my competitors. Besides, they are gathering the information using the GA API (I think).
Do you trust Google with your Analytics knowing they benchmark your performance and show it anonymously to others? Many large companies don't trust Google and choose Ominture Site Catalyst.
Don't worry, you are fine trusting SEOMoz with your analytics. They don't even have your GA password.

RE: Somebody wants to share something with me?
Nikos, I answered a couple of your other questions. I think you may be heading down the wrong path by trying to get links from low quality sites. It sounds like you are trying to get any link possible. I would recommend writing a blog and putting a lot of effort into writing AWESOME content. Here's why, you need to get people like James and I to link to you. One link from me would be equivalent to 500+ crappy links. There are many ways to get "FREE" quality links. Ever thought of donating your time for free and placing a link on someone's website.
DoFollow forums can work. It has worked for me, but they were relative forums in my industry. You are looking for any type of forum. Google this: your industry inurl:forum
Replace "your industry" with whatever you want. This will help build a crap link for you, but it may bring traffic too.
-
RE: Does the complete url count as backlink?
It counts. One link is better than no link. Just make sure you don't SPAM. Write great content!
-
RE: Best kind of backlinks
My best backlinks came to me. I wrote great content and somehow a couple universities thought it would help their students. And guess what? The links were FREE (my favorite four-letter-word). LOL

RE: Indexing an e-commerce site
If you are using Magento Commerce, just select the option in Config.
If you are using something else, then you may need a plugin.
Any eCommerce software should have already run into this problem a couple years ago.
-
RE: Duplicate Page Title
Check GWT. You may have to 301 redirect the index to the /. I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it. Check the SERP and see which one you are already ranking for. If / is in the SERP, then Google has already chosen which one to display. Also check GWT under Duplicate Titles.

RE: Vanity Virgin Domains
Please read this: http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo
If the question you are asking was true, then everyone on SEOmoz would have already done so. Google would have nothing to index on a domain has no website.

RE: Do search engines only count links that have google analytics?
To answer this question: Do search engines only count links that have google analytics?
No. That sounds ridiculous. What about omniture and webmetrics?
-
RE: Your Experience with Exact Match Anchor Text Penalties
JC Pennys got in trouble for this. Matt Cutts manually deranked them:
Just don't overdo your act. Throw in variations of the keyword. Try and make it look more natural.
Also, use your Google Analytics to find keywords that may actually be converting at a higher rate.
-
RE: SEOmoz not displaying correct amount of links?
OSE is not perfect, but it is a gauge I use for competitor analysis. My sites have much less links in OSE compared to GWT. Compare the smartness of GoogleBot with RogerBot. When GoogleBot get to an ecommerce website, somehow it grabs the product listed on your HTML sitemap and inserts it into the search box. I heard Matt Cutts say that. Imagine them doing that with WordPress and every other CMS that has a search field? RogerBot isn't as smart.
-
RE: Would you say it is more bennificial to seperate keywords in the title tag tag of a page using a common ( keyword , keyword | Domain.com) or using a hyphen as SEOmoz best practices reccommends (keyword - keyword | domain.com)?
I agree with Ryan. In addition, if you are using commas, make sure it reads well. There is nothing more that looks unprofessional than bad grammar.

RE: How to pick an SEO pro?

Mark this as good answer if it answers you qestion.

RE: How to increase traffic to forum?
I like the idea of finding fans of other local teams. I am a San Diego Padres fan. I like sports so when baseball is not in season, football is. I think the chances of a sports fan liking more than one sport is quite high.
-
RE: Development site accidentally crawled - Will this cause problems?
I don't even worry about that anymore. I let Google see me build out a site anyway. I used to worry about that, but not anymore.
"I was a little alarmed, as there are no links to the domain and we'll soon be transitioning all the content over to our primary production domain."
They probably came to the server and hit every site on it.

RE: Backlink stupid newbie question
Don't do directory submissions if that's what you are talking about, especially if your site is new. Link building is important, but don't get fooled into thinking the more links from link directories is going to get your site ranking. A lot of them are straight out spammy sites anyway. Instead do some manual directory submissions using this: http://www.seomoz.org/directories I would recommend to build one real link and one directory submission at a time.
Focus on writing KICK ASS content and people will link to you. I have Universities link to me and I have nothing to do with education. But these Universities link because they find the information useful for there students.
I suggest reading the Beginners Guide: http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo/growing-popularity-and-links
PS, I, along with everyone in this forum, have been waiting 2 years for DMOZ to index our sites. Submit and move on.
-
RE: Should we use "and" or "&"?
I would probably use AT&T's example (ATT). I believe Matt Cutts said the & is looked at as a character. I tried going straight to at&t.com and it sent me to a SERP. Using the word "and" in the domain sounds weird to me.

RE: I NEED ADVICE: Need Web Software for customers to access backend
I'm thinking O would have them pull the file like through a web connect (like my quickbooks) or they import the file using a spreadsheet once per month. Yes, compliance can be a big thing. Thank you for sharing your input.
-
RE: I NEED ADVICE: Need Web Software for customers to access backend
Basically the site will be built from the ground up, of course using a CMS. The owner would give access to subscribers. It is a credit management service. Currently the owner of the company gets referrals from the banks for people who were turned down for a mortgage or something large. These people/clients will need to get their credit repaired.
All information will be on the subscribers dashboard in their respective accounts. Banking information will be pulled from banks accounts and FICO scores will be pulled from credit reporting agencies. There would be target goals to get a FICO score above a certain goal amount.
I primarily use WordPress and Magento. I have seldom used Joomla and Drupal, but I am familiar with them. Although I have used WordPress many times, I have never heard of any plugin that can create a backend for subscribers. I can't think of anything that is out of the box. The cost of having custom program applications may be too expensive for the prospective client.
@Ryan, You say "This functionality is offered with most any CMS.". Are you saying that WP has a feature where a paying subscriber can have their own account? I have that in Magento, but it's more about tracking packages, orders, subscriptions. I guess it may work in Magento, but I would have to hack everything. Is there something a little more out of the box?
Thanks guys. I always try helping people in this Q&A forum. Good to know there are pros here, not all beginners.

I NEED ADVICE: Need Web Software for customers to access backend
I have a prospect in the credit repair industry. Does anybody know of some software where the clients can log into their own accounts to see the progress?
The feature I am looking for is like a Real Estate website where the brokers can create their own accounts and upload their own properties.

RE: Should you block search results?
Yes, I block my images so people don't steal them. I paid $20 for some of them. Also I don't want my quote page or receipt page to get indexed so I block them. So to answer your question... only certain parts of my sites are blocked, but not the whole thing.

RE: How ehow beat Panda?
eHow is run by Demand Media. You may want to look into that direction instead. As far as I know, a person cannot simply create an eHow account and start typing away. Recently I hired a Demand Media editor. She said that there basically is no more work for them and that many had to leave. She also said that the topics are very focused. Here is a straight copy and paste of an email from her:
they are starting to focus more on expertise focused articles, so unless you're, say, a mechanic who also knows how to write, you're out of the loop over there now.

RE: Linking strategy between my own sites
I was going to create a few small sites that were specific to a service. I was too lazy to do multiple sites so I only did one bigger site. Now everytime I make a new page, it starts ranking immediately on the lower part of page one for my targeted keywords. The site built strength overall. I would probably do exactly as EGOL says and redirect everything to one site.
-
RE: How to rank lower, fast....
I'm giving you a thumbs up for that question, It was funny. I don't thing there is anything you can do. Nothing comes to mind. Maybe you can get those back links pointed to your competitors.
-
RE: Facebook Likes
I don't look at that as paying for links, although I see what you mean. As far as I know, "Likes" are not part of the ranking factor. But it is more likely that someone who "likes" or "Shares" your info may link to you.Rand wrote a post on this in Ranking Factors.

RE: Flat vs. subdomain web structure
I agree. When I use subdomains, I start thinking about FTP. I also think about the user having the best user experience. If he wants to make one site that markets 50 states, then using a CMS would be the answer. But creating 50 subdomains would be repetitive. I his case I would use folders and if the independent partner needs access to the site, then add them as a user with limited site access.

RE: Website tables
In Sergio's case, he only has a few pages (less than 20?). All he needs a an HTML site built in Dreamweaver and that the end of this discussion.
If not dreamweaver, then I would say WP.
Alan, don't get me wrong here.... I'm not saying that leaking link juice is not important. But I don't think Sergio needs to be concerned about it nor iNetSeo. If the loss of link juice is BIG, then hell yes; fix it. If it's small, then I wouldn't sweat the details. I have all kinds of errors on my sites, but trying to fix small errors isn't keeping me from ranking #1 - #3 for many of my top keywords. Feel free to run a Bing Report on my site if you want. I rank way stronger in yahoo and bing than in Google.

RE: Do Domain Extensions such as .com or .net affect SEO value?
"There is no difference technically for SEO optmization on a given web site with any domain name extentions"
Sorry Lonnie, I have to disagree with you a little:
I have to put in this article that Rand wrote a while back:
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/google-vs-bing-correlation-analysis-of-ranking-elements
The only TLDs I would buy are .com, .net, .org. Forget all the rest because I never see them in google anyway (info, tv, biz, whatever)
-
RE: Flat vs. subdomain web structure
Use craigslist.org as an example. Every city has it's own subdomain. It's not in a subfolder where link juice is passed. Using a subdomain is almost like having a different domain.
Your choices will be state.example.com or example.com/state. I personally would use subfolders instead of subdomains to keep link juice. No "if" I was going to GeoTarget each state and I did NOT want to be in other states, then I would use subdomains the way Craigslist is set up.
A better question is this. You state you want to sell "a" product in 50 states. The way I read that is you are going to have 50 pages of duplicate content (whether it's one product or 1,000 products). How do you mean independent partners? You have to explain that a little further. Do you mean affiliates? Do you mean independent contractors like MLMs (network marketing). Your website should be structured around your business objectives. What if you have two partners within one state?

RE: Modifying urls cause broken links?
I 100% agree with Dan. He has the correct answer

RE: How about some SEO tips for small local businesses
There is a webinar from Rand on this. http://www.seomoz.org/webinars/content-for-local-sites-and-local-search
Also if you purchase the Mozcon videos, there was an AWESOME presentation on this: http://www.seomoz.org/videos/turning-google-places-pain-into-gain
I don't do local result anymore, but when I did 4 years ago for a client, I tried getting reviews from people everywhere (even overseas, ya know where I going?). His site still ranks #2 on local SERPS.
If you are having trouble, send a personal email to ALL your FB friends and have them "Like" your site. Have them post your domain on their wall. OR use AddThis on your site like I do here: www.shipoverseas.com. I have facebook likes on all my individual pages (not the new ones though). People in Nigeria, UK and all over the world are liking my stuff.
You may not have international rankings, but my point here is you have friends to help you out in the beginning. i would give you a link from one of my sites "IF" you did some work for free. Help people and they will help you.

RE: Un-link Google Analytics
I understand now. If there is no edit button, then email SEOmoz. They may have to manually delete it for you.
-
RE: ECommerce Site, URL's, Canonical and Tracking Referral Traffic
To answer your 1st question: Yes you are going to have duplicate content issues. SEOmoz won't catch everything especially if you don't put those URLs in a sitemap where they can access it.
Your client is doing it ALL WRONG!
Install Google Analytics. Use the Google Anaytics URL Builder : http://support.google.com/googleanalytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=55578
Log in to GA and go to Traffic Sources > Campaigns.
I just created one for you: http://www.erasedisease.com/?utm_source=SEOmoz&utm_medium=QandA&utm_campaign=Francisco_Meza_affiliate . Click it and you'll see it populate in GA in a day or two. It'll make sense once you see it in action. Basically you are creating URLs to track campaigns from affiliates. Now you will NEVER have duplicate content issues.
-
RE: Do forums still have any SEO value?
If you have the time to run a forum, go for it. If not, then find someone who will or don't do it at all. Also, a more important question would be, what is the purpose of starting a forum? I don' t know what FB's paugin has to do with a forum. Are you trying to get registrations and or subscriptions? Are you trying to create backlinks from the forum to your own site like people do when they try pointing links from their blogs to their homepage hoping it will rank higher?
