  • I believe I saw a study put out one time that showed that recognized brands have higher engagement metrics than non-branded sites, but I can't seem to find it. Can anyone point me in the direction of such a study?

  • Hey Guys, My videos are doing well on YouTube with lots of views and comments (about 1.5 million views). Nevertheless, I can’t manage to get them to appear on Google’s first SERP for my branded keywords. What am I doing wrong? What in your opinion are the major ranking factors for YouTube videos? Thanks!

  • Hi But stuck on growing the community aspect of a fashion website i am developing. The site already has a comprehensive shop with 200,000 products in, a large article and video section in but it is lacking a little in fresh, up to date content. The long term plan is to create a large forum and have a good level of interaction there but that will take a while as the site grows. To get the site growing I want to bring in columnist and bloggers to write about what they are liking in fashion, which famous people are wearing what and so forth. The trouble is I am having issues finding people. There are tons of people running their own wordpress sub domains with similar sites but not sure where I would find these kind of people. I would be looking to reward them with their labour by either paying per post or allowing them to put adsense etc on their pages. Anyone else grown a community from the start, where did you find bloggers etc? thanks. Carl

  • Hi guys, A local company provides tourism services in Spain but its potential clients reside abroad in USA mostly. This means we have 2 search potentials:
    1. For reaching international clients via international search in advance before they arrive (preferred).
    2. Last minute booking potential for local serach when they have already arrived and seek a service while already here. So far we have targeted USA and international searches solely and ignored local search. We have tried to target our website to USA in GoogleWebmasterTools and link building location mostly. But what about local search? Would establishing ourselves in Local Search (google places and maps etc) be a confusion for Google and mess with our good rankings in US? Or would it add to our potential of additional last minute local seaches? What's the best approach in a situation like this? Is a happy medium possible? Thanks in advance.

  • Hi, How do you capture as much brand results as possible in search results? I know Mike from Koozai recently did a video about brand reputation, but this is slightly different. The current issue i'm having that the client's brand name is also a specific geographic destination, hence the confusion in SERP's. This means non-related industries are eating up the client's potential market share and traffic. My objective would obviously be to capture as much traffic as possible for brand related keywords for the site, so that we can focus more on long tail product terms. Any help would be appreciated. Obviously re-branding is out of the question. Regards, Vahe

  • With all the stress on inbound marketing and focusing on links for traffic and not just SEO, it would seem to me that going forward the best skilled people for the job of link building are public relations consultants (at least for startups). PR folks have the contacts and training to get publicity on the big authority sites and really drive big traffic as well as strong links. What am I missing? For link building, why should we hire an SEO firm and not a PR firm? Secondly, I've been contacting a few agencies to get some idea of what they charge and most seem to start at about $5k pm whereas we only have a budget of around $1k for link building. Am I wasting my time thinking I may get any benefit at this low of a budget? I'd love to hear from anyone with any experience using PR firms/consultants and if you have any recommendations that would be great also.

  • Just wondering if anyone had any advice on working with a client's PR agency to maximise your efforts for them online? A lot of their work will transfer really well online, however, I'm worried if we barge in their they may see us as stepping on their toes and feel a bit threatened... Has anyone had any experience combining efforts with a PR agency in the past and how have you achieved success? I think it will be key to get them on board so we're both pulling in the same direction, it's just finding the right way of going about this without alienating them...

  • We are running into more and more new clients who bought into marketing packages with call tracking and even some that created duplicate websites for these numbers.  I believe this is a bad idea for clients as it dilutes their NAP.  Are others seeing a similar trend? How do you work around this problem with and for clients?

  • I have read that if a Company issues a press release via a third part service (e.g. PR Web) it is best not to place the release on the company’s own website due to negative SEO effects. Is this the case? I‘d really appreciate others thoughts on this.

  • Hi Mozfans, I've been asked by my management to try and "Dominate" our Branded SERP (I've also posted this question as a private question to the Moz staff but would love to know what the community thinks of this or if anyone has "Brand SERP" experience); For our brand name, the first page SERP currently looks like this; ================================ Current SERP 1 (Google UK): Our homepage (with the 6 pack of prominent pages beneath it) An advert that we control An advert that we control An advert that we control An advert that we control One of those random business directories - we don't control the listing Something not related to us at all Something not related to us at all One of those random business directories - we don't control the listing Something not related to us at all ================================ As you can see from the above list, we are already dominating the top 50% of our branded SERP page, however management would like 100% (of course). Now two obvious things that are missing from our Branded SERP page are our Facebook Page and our Twitter Profile, however, how do I get those to rank? I believe I read somewhere (it might have been on the SEOmoz/YOUmoz blog) that the answer is to build links to those profiles (with your brand name as the anchor text). Would that work? We currently use an external SEO company for our link building so could it help if we asked them to build links for us pointing at those two social profiles? Also, are there any other methods for dominating a branded SERP? What would you recommend? Thanks in advance everyone! Regards, Ash

  • I'm interested in finding research / studies on the correlation between organic and PPC CTR. I've heard panelists at Search Engine Strategies conferences cite research stating that simultaneously ranking organically and serving PPC ads for the same KW increases the chance of getting click-throughs (versus being in organic OR PPC space only). I think, but I'm not sure, that it might have been a comScore study but I haven't been able to find it on their site. Is anyone familiar with this study (or a similar study)? If so, please point me in the right direction and include a link, if possible. Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Hi everybody! We are planning to offer an incentive to all our customers who interact with us on social media websites. What's the most important thing to ask from a customer? Facebook to like our Facebook business page or to like our own website through Facebook? to just follow us on Facebook or to actually comment / interact on our wall? Google + to +1, share, add to circle our Google+ business webpage or to +1 or share our own website? So basically what do we need to promote most? Our Facebook / Google+ business pages or our own website through social media marketing? While we understand it's important to actually interact with the customers and offer value on social media websites, we are looking to boost our SEO efforts. Thank you!

  • Hi, I set-up a UK Google Merchant feed about 8months ago now which is automated for around 25K products. I am trying to work out why some other sites still rank better than mine in the Shopping listing under the default 'Relevancy' filter. I have both a greater number and better reviews than the competitors and am showing a better price. I wonder whether anyone has any information on whether the following factors affect the listing position under the 'Relevance' filter: 1 - Age of the listing or domain 2 - Historic 'Click-Rate' for domain in Shopping listing 2 - Overall quality of the data feed i.e. do errors or warnings for other products in the feed affect the positions of all items in the feed? 3 - Bounce rate or on-page time of clicks to target site 4 - Diversity of review sources 5 - Google Checkout reviews 6 - Company location in Google Local For an ecommerce site this positioning can make a big-time difference to sales, so I'm hoping someone has run some tests on this they can share, and if not then why not? Hoping someone can throw some light on this, as I can't find a great deal out there on this fundamental revenue stream for me. Simon

  • I recently launched a scrollable web comic at www.shoutout.co.in. In space of 2 days after launch, i got more than 100 likes. While this is great number, i am not sure if this is best usage of options provided by facebook. Which option is best share/like/share-with-comment option? Currently i only have "like" implementation. Is this giving less probability of visibility to friends than "share-with-comment" option? stats and numbers from your experience/campaigns will help.

  • I've got a little bit of a dilemma.  A company I'm working for has an ecommerce site that is moving to Volusion.  It is impossible to add "domain.com/blog" so I am forced to use a subdomain in order to keep consistency. We are starting a push in Social media and have secured shorter handles for the brand to use on the different networks. One of the main goals originally for developing a blog is to build trust but since the domain names are so big (26 characters) and the ecommerce sites already have a good amount of trust building factors in them I am beginning to question my original plan. My question is this: If I go with a shorter brand recognized domain name to develop the blog on which is different than the ecommerce domain (keyword matched) will I loose too much trust and ranking opportunity because of the difference in domains. I know there isn't a golden bullet for this question but i would love to get you your take on it.

  • We recently acquired a premium domain name The domain we were operating on before had a lot of SEO done on it, as well as branding campaigns. Now that we have the premium domain, would it be wise to start doing SEO on the premium domain and discontinue old domain promotions if we plan on changing the brand name? to clear up any confusion, we own for example AAAFurnitureStore.com we acquired the premium domain: AAAFurniture.com should we redirect AAAFurnitureStore.com -> AAAFurniture.com or since we already have established presence/brand do opposite and redirect AAAFurniture.com -> AAAFurnitureStore.com and keep the brand name same as "AAA Furniture Store"?

  • I have been noticing a pattern with my highest ROI keywords. The company I work for sells a ton of different brands. Over the last month one by one my ranks are droping down by about three to the parent companys brand stack. Now I know that Google favors brands but it seems in the last month they have become much more aggressive with brand stacking. Has anyone else noticed this problem or has there been some action on the part of Google to make this happen?

  • Does anyone have any good examples or case studies? Right now I'm working on a site with both B2B and B2C products crowded onto one site.  I'd love to find some examples of companies that have built their online B2B brand separately from their consumer products. I found the Constructive Playthings case study on Marketing Sherpa but nothing else.

  • A year and a half ago, SEO was all new to me and I may have made a mistake that looks to be a problem now. In a misguided quest to rank higher and faster, I used a domain for it's keywords and quick ranking potential rather than using my business' name URL. I've built the links and authority to where I'm now ranking well for many of my local search terms which is important for my local business success. The situation is that now I want to expand my business nationally as a franchise which will require my company's name in the domain(?), and the addition of entirely new pages and terms. My company's name' URL>    www.ImpactMMAfitness.com    is pointed to my site www.austinfitnessgyms.com  and GA shows a significant # of visitors type our name in to find us. I also think it would be odd for someone outside my town looking for franchise info to be pointed to a different domain with Austin in it. I was wondering what option would be best: Keep as is Change domains - ouch!? Make a new second site ? I have 'ImpactFranchise.com I could use for a new site just for franchising but I would be starting at the bottom for any rankings. Is there a solution, or did I dig myself into a hole?

  • Hi i run a lifestyle magazine and we have articles that we need to promtoe straight away before they go out of date. I am looking at ways where i can promote an article to attract visitors to the site to read the article. For example http://www.in2town.co.uk/news/trip-advisor/holiday-makers-have-nothing-to-worry-about-says-thomas-cook-boss We write articles and want to find a way where we can promote the articles where we could place a paragraph or two and then put at the bottom of that read the rest of the article here. Can anyone please suggest how we can do this to attract traffic to our site and then hence this traffic would then keep coming back to the site to read more news and articles.

  • Hi everybody.  I recently purchased on an ecommerce site which deals 100% with digital product.  Unfortunately there is a rather large online community who illegally share my products.  I was considering ways to combat this piracy (It's impossible to stop it completely) and then I started wondering if it would make more sense for me to post something to the forums & blogs that pirate my stuff saying... "Although he disapproves of piracy, the owner of this product realizes that it is impossible to eliminate it completely.  Instead, he asks that you please head over to ####.com and like us on facebook, +1 us, etc.  But remember there are advantages to purchasing products on ####.com, here is a list of them... " What do you all think?  Would the SEO advantages of doing this outweigh the time & money it takes to fight the piracy?

  • I'm working on two sites, with seperate Google Analytics, both referring to each other. Am I able to easily find out which keywords/pages referrals are being generated from each site? e.g. http://www.jbaseedpotatoes.co.uk - targets home consumers, and refers trade enquires to... http://www.seedpotatomerchants.co.uk - which targets bulk orders, and refers home growers back to jbaseedpotatoes. Question is, how can we track which keywords/pages are sending traffic between each site, quickly? Is it simply a case of trawling through each site's analytics to find out, or does anyone have any tips? Ultimately, we'd like to find out which keywords & pages are picking up traffic from the wrong target audiences. Thanks

  • A friend wanted to setup a website where people would share and vote on "widget" ideas where the winning idea got build for free. They bought cute the domain name widg.et and branded their site as widg.et. However, for SEO, they are having widg.et forward to www.sharewidgets.com. Then, to complicate things further, they changed their business model to remove the voting feature and now the site is just set to show off the widgets they've made and let people order new custom widgets. They might add the voting feature back later. "Widget" and "widgets" in this case has an SEOmoz difficulty of 72% and 71%, so quite high and none of the two word or long tail phrases have much traffic. What do you think they should do: Remove all domain forwarding and use widg.et as their only domain as it's less confusing and better for branding Get another domain that includes their keyword widget for the SEO exact match benefit Keep it as is, even though "sharewidgets" is no longer quite as applicable Many Thanks!

  • I run a business that offers eco friendly screen printing. Let's call it ECO SHIRT SHOP.  We offer a specialized type of printing thru the website, then contract to printers throughout the US to execute the printing. (They each have their own distinct print businesses that they operate as well.) As of now we only divulge that we have print facilities in places like chicago, seattle, etc.  but do not display addresses as we do not want to confuse customers. By not displaying these addresses, I feel we are missing huge opportunities to be listed by services like Yelp, Google places, etc - consequentially losing highly convertible geography specific search traffic. Ques: The print shops are open to us displaying facility address info, even somehow saying that Print Shop X prints for the ECO SHIRT SHOP network.  I want to be transparent with customers and get more localized traffic, but don't want to confuse operations or give away business. For all you strategy guru's out there, how would you handle this?  I am at a cross roads, and how we move forward is hugely important for the future of our business. Thanks, as always for your thoughts on this.

  • Hello all. I am a new member of SEOmoz and liking it so far. This is my first post to you all (my new family). I have a client who is starting a new company. We know for sure that he needs a new domain name. The question is two part: Part One Should he buy (is it worth the money) a parked domain that has some age to it. For example, a 9 or 10 year old domain that is getting "0" traffic and has no PR? Or Should he just put that same say $1000 price tag back in his wallet and spend the money on a link building campaign to his new $9.95 domain name? Part Two We found a domain he really likes but only the ".co" ".net" and ".biz" are available. The .com belongs to a big company that has made a simple landing page from the .com domain name (that we really want) and will probably never let it go to us. So we will always be stuck without the .com portion of the domain registrations for this domain name if we go for it. Question: a. Will we have difficulty competing for our own name recognition since the "big company" owns the landing page (even though it is a "0" PR page? b. Can we live on only the .co extension or would we live to regret not getting all the extensions related to our domain name? thanks everyone! I look forward to contributing here as well.

  • OK, before anyone says anything, I know this isn't the right way to do things properly and that if I want to build a genuine and interested following base, I need to create some great content, tweet great things of interest and build a genuine and engaged follower base.... BUT ....Has anyone got any actual experience of using paid for twitter followers and if so would you recommend it or recommend any particular company who does it in the UK? I know there's companies who do it by getting reciprocal followers and others who just use bots to give you lots of 'useless' followers. I essentially want to know if it can work at all on any level and get you some degree of useful followers (i.e. people who may actually read your tweets as opposed to fake accounts).

  • Hi, Today our business has no social presence so we are starting from the ground up. We have implemented the Google +1 button across the site, but nothing more. The social sites I'm considering targeting are: Linked In Twitter Facebook Google +1 I already have personal accounts used personal sharing on Linked In, FB and +1. I'm unsure whether I need to create a new facebook account for each of those and then create the business profile on each one or whether I should use my existing personal account. Further, for Google +1, there was no requirement to create any business page of any kind, all I had to do was take the code and insert it into the website. That confused me as for Facebook and Linked In, I was sure you must have an account up in order to have the social Like or Share button working Given I'm at the very start of this process, it would be great to get others input into how they went about this, and perhaps share any pitfalls they may seem obvious to avoid in hindsight. Thanks.

  • Hi, I have a client with a reasonable size WP site (around 5,000 pages) and we plan to launch a forum to increase user engagement and interaction. My client is in the B2C sector, mainly male and typically high net worth. I have read the Moz article the-huge-untapped-potential-of-qa-content-for-seo with interest and that raises a few questions: Does the Q&A model works in the B2C sector? What is the best way to mix / run in parallel Q&A and posts/threads? Who are the best technology providers within this sector? It doesn't need to be necessarily in WP, but it would help. We would like to incorporate the same reward structure that has been so well impemented with Moz and so it's the usual buy or build discussion... Can anybody highlight great examples of best practice? Thanks in advance ofr your help! J.

  • Hello fellow Mozzers! I just wondered if there was any way of finding out what terms / videos people are searching YouTube for in the same way as getting rough traffic numbers using the AdWords Keyword Suggestion tool? Or even a trends-type tool to give rough indicators as to which terms are currently more popular than others. And what people's opinions are on whether to go after terms that people are frequently putting into YouTube, or terms that are popular in general and hope your video appears in the universal search? Cheers guys, Nick.

• (Note: main question in bold) I know this post basically establishes that Facebook shares are not a strong cause of increased rankings. But what about likes? I've searched and read through the forum and YouMoz blog but haven't really found this question answered. We just redesigned our site and we're implementing sharing options in the booking and order completion processes - should we point the Facebook Like button to like our URL or our Facebook brand page (currently with 3,800+ likes)? Seems that a like of the URL would be more direct ranking value (what we're going for), but according to that same post mentioned above, Google doesn't crawl or index FB wall pages... so is all Facebook activity - shares, url likes, brand page likes - for naught? (at least for now, till Google starts using that info)

  • Today I discovered a new type of ranking competition.  I'm still investigating, so I don't know all the details, but I think it's like this.  In addition to our online store, we also sell our products via Amazon Merchant.  We are the only distributor in the US, so I was surprised to see our products offered at a modest number of other sites, often with very elevated prices (not linking to Amazon, but actually selling our product on their site).  I shot the product images and the images are mine.  Now Sears is selling our product on Sears.com through one of their merchant sellers.  The prices are grossly inflated, and the Sears Google ranking are pushing us out of places we used to be.  I'm guessing that if someone actually purchases our product via Sears.com, the order will be forwarded to our Amazon listing for fulfillment, and the reseller will pocket the price difference minus a percentage for Sears. I will follow up with both Amazon and Sears, but regarding the competition with your own Amazon merchant product listings, is this a known problem? Best,
    Christopher

  • Hi All, Does anyone have any info/opinions/scoop on HubPages.com? A client is considering using the service and I don't know much about it. Having a hard time figuring out the SEO value it would provide. It doesn't nofollow the links you create, which is nice, but not sure if the pages you create on this site provide any real link juice. Client isn't interested really in generating revenue, but rather just wants to help increase exposure for his brand. He already has a blog going, so I'm trying to determine if putting in effort to creating articles on this site would be worthwhile, or if we should focus efforts more on other backlink methods, such as guest posting on blogs. Anyone have thoughts?
