  • Hi guys, Do any of you know about responsive web design? In short it's a method that ensures that your website adopts to the resolution on the users screen. The point is that you don't have to make a site for each format, it's all there in your overall design. So, to the question: Does, to your knowledge, an integration of responsive web design harm your SEO? I tried to search for "responsive we design + SEO" but I really didn't get any useful information. Thanks a lot - all comments are very much appreciated.

  • Hi I'm having trouble understanding why I'm getting the results I am for my organic traffic data. I've been focussing on a few keywords throughout my website and the most recent results show that there is a big increase in the Organic Search Visits and the Non-Paid Keywords Sending Search Visits for both Branded Keywords and Non-branded Keywords, but the results for URLs Receiving Entrances Via Search are the complete opposite. Down by a few percent. I don't understand why this would happen and was hoping that someone could maybe explain and give a few reasons for why this is happening and maybe give some tips on how to stop it from happening in the future if possible. Thanks.

  • I am looking at potentially using some Schema mark up on hotel listing pages. This is for an OTA where lots of hotels from all over the world are available for selection (think hotels.com, booking.com, agoda.com etc) For the itemscope itemtype on say the hotel name should I be defining it as http://schema.org/hotel or http://schema.org/localbusiness For example against the hotel name I would have: Grand Plaza Hanoi I assume its the former, but I was just after some 2nd opinions. Thanks, Ben

  • Ok so maybe not ask for "forgiveness" because I am not sure what we did to get penalized. I believe our site is being penalized 1. most of our usual keywords are not ranked in their usual placements in the search results. 2. some of our keywords are listing the wrong pages as search results and 3. our search results are landing on pages 8 or 9 on Google (not 2 or 3 as before). This is an ecommerce site. How do we figure out what trigger the penalty (if at all) and how do we fix it so that we can get our ranking back (is that even possible)? Please advise - much help is needed!

  • Hi...I'm new here....not a professional SEO at all....just been teaching myself as much as I can about SEO on my own as I'm a small business owner desperately trying to make something out of herself. Could use your thoughts on this...please forgive me if this isn't your usual type of question you get here: so...I've been going through all the suggestions for on page optimisation and researching competitors links given through this lovely SEO Moz pro account .  One competitor in particular....has spammed A LOT of sites...I think she's hired some company to do it for her.  There's article submissions that don't even sound like they are written by someone who speaks English and very low quality sites for back links including some with adult content...however she's got thousands of these links so she ranks extremely high on all keywords.  All her pages have very high keyword density and could be accused of keyword stuffing big time.  I put her website through the SEOmoz grader....she's got a C and I've got an A.  She's completely catered her site to Google not the customer and its obvious.  But other competitors in my product have started doing the same thing as this gal and low and behold their sites are popping up in google searches also. Beginning to feel frustrated with my hours of efforts and wondering how I can compete with people like this when I'm trying to be a good girl with Google and focus on creating a great site.  My hits per day are increasing slowly, my Alexa rank (hoping this matters) is improving rapidly and you can actually find me on the google search when I couldn't before (I'm page 10 now yay)  so I don't feel like a total failure but still am wondering if hitting page 1 for my keywords will happen this lifetime. Why does Google seem to reward people who go against all these countless books and resources on SEO I'm reading?   Could use any thoughts/suggestions you might have on this matter. Thanks for your help. x

  • Hi everyone, I have an issue determining what type of duplicate content I have. www.example.com/index.php?mact=Calendar,m57663,default,1&m57663return_id=116&m57663detailpage=&m57663year=2011&m57663month=6&m57663day=19&m57663display=list&m57663return_link=1&m57663detail=1&m57663lang=en_GB&m57663returnid=116&page=116 Since I am not an coding expert, to me it looks like it is a URL parameter duplicate content. Is it? At the same time "return_id" would makes me think it is a session id duplicate content. I am confused about how to determine different types of duplicate content, even by reading articles on Seomoz about it: http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/duplicate-content. Could someone help me on how to recognize different types of duplicate content? Thank you!

  • The website is for the attorney that serves several nearby cities. The main page is optimized for the biggest central city. I have several options how to go after the smaller surrounding cities: 1. Create optimized pages inside the main domain 2. Get more or less exact keyword domains for each city e.g. for the city ABC get yourABClawyer.com and then a) use 1 page websites that use the same template as main website and link all the menu items to the main website b)use 1 page website with a link "for more information go to our main website" c) point exact keyword domains to the optimized pages within the main domain. Which option would be the best in terms of SEO and user experience? Would people freak out if they click on the menu item and go to a different domain website even though it uses the same template (option 2a) Would I get more bounces with option 2b in your opinion? Would option 2c have any positive SEO effect? Should I not even bother with exact keyword domain and go with option 1?

  • my crawl is showing duplicate content between my sitename.com and sitename.com/ i remember the beginner's guide referencing that these are separate websites - but how do you modify their title info on a wordpress.org blog, and what's the difference between getting to these two sites? also, are there any wordpress.org plugins to mass fix meta descriptions, and not founds, retroactively? i have all in one seo, but not sure how to apply the changes retroactively. a new crawl shows too many to fix manually (89+) missing metas,  mostly due to multiple pages on categories, etc. and other time consuming, tedious generations.. any help appreciated, thanks

  • Before starting a new ppc campaign, I am working on making my site landing pages Relevant. I see some ppc experts suggest separate, noindex, landing pages. But aren't my dynamically generated product pages landing pages- They have a call to action "add to basket" button, a big photo, and orignal detailed conent- prodct description - below all that. Sometimes I would like to advertise we have a broad selection of a Vendor's line- so then my natural landing page is a categegory page with thumbnail photos and the call to action is clicking the photo or product name to go to the specific product page. Can an experienced adwords person help me understand this better? Do I really want/need to create seperate ppc landing pages? What would the difference be? Thanks as ever Handcrafter

  • Hi All, I was wondering how best to to approach optimisation of a site that exists on a single .com domain, but has different subfolders for different languages. The site is a .com and it has subfolders for French, Spanish, Russian and English.  The business is situated in France and the vast majority of clients are French and English speakers. I've read that it's possible to geo target these subfolders using webmaster tools however I believe this is an inferior method of optimisation than having tld's.  Just wondered if anyone had experience of htis and could provide any advice ?   As they won't be rebuilding the site for another year or so I wondered if there were any quick wins? My second question is to do with how best to set these campaigns up within SEO Moz. would it be better to track at a subdomain or subfolder leverl (for different languages)? If someone could advise I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks, vantresca

On my home page I use -- <% If InStr(Request.ServerVariables("SERVER_NAME"),"www") = 0 Then Response.Status="301 Moved Permanently" Response.AddHeader "Location","http://www." & Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_HOST") & "/" Response.End End if %> `Is there a good way to combine these, so that I still get all of the rules of the first script whilst also redirecting any non www versions to the www version? in other words
    domain.com/jobs-in-" & LCase(SEOFriend(replacej.Fields.Item("JBLocation")))
    Eould redirect to
    www.domain.com/jobs-in-" & LCase(SEOFriend(replacej.Fields.Item("JBLocation"))) Thanks in advance`

  • I had this idea that I would reach out to webmasters in my niche and offer to teach them something - for example, how to set up a killer Facebook landing page.  In return I would ask them for a link from their site. I have a few quesitons: 1. Would this be considered "white hat"? 2. How would you word the email to the webmasters?  I was thinking of something like this: "Hi [webmaster name].  I was checking out your website and your Facebook page.  I was wondering if you would like me to show you how to create a great Facebook landing page that will gain you more fans.  (As an example, you can see my Facebook page here: [insert link].)  In return, all I ask for is a mention, in the form of a link, from your site.  What do you think?" What do you guys think?

  • SEOmoz Community! I have a relatively complicated SEO issue that has me pretty stumped... First and foremost, I'd appreciate any suggestions that you all may have. I'll be the first to admit that I am not an SEO expert (though I am trying to be). Most of my expertise is with PPC. But that's beside the point. Now, the issues I am having: I have two sites: http://www.federalautoloan.com/Default.aspx and http://www.federalmortgageservices.com/Default.aspx A lot of our SEO efforts thus-far have done good for Federal Auto Loan... and we are seeing positive impacts from them. However, we recently did a server transfer (may or may not be related)... and since that time a significant number of INTERNAL duplicate content pages have appeared through the SEOmoz crawler. The number is around 20+ for both Federal Auto Loan and Federal Mortgage Services (see attachments). I've tried to include as much as I can via the attachments. What you will see is all of the content pages (articles) with dupe. content issues along with a screen capture of the articles being listed as duplicate for the pages: Car Financing How It Works A Home Loan is Possible with Bad Credit (Please let me know if you could use more examples) At first I assumed it was simply an issue with SEOmoz... however, I am now worried it is impacting my sites (I wasn't originally because Federal Auto Loan has great quality scores and is climbing in organic presence daily). That being said, we recently launched Federal Mortgage Services for PPC... and my quality scores are relatively poor. In fact, we are not even ranking (scratch that, not even showing that we have content) for "mortgage refinance" even though we have content (unique, good, and original content) specifically around "mortgage refinance" keywords. All things considered, Federal Mortgage Services should be tighter in the SEO department than Federal Auto Loan... but it is clearly not! I could really use some significant help here... Both of our sites have a number of access points: http://www.federalautoloan.com/Default.aspx and http://www.federalmortgageservices.com/Default.aspx are both the designated home pages. And I have rel=canonical tags stating such. However, my sites can also be reached via the following: http://www.federalautoloan.com http://www.federalautoloan.com/default.aspx http://www.federalmortgageservices.com http://www.federalmortgageservics.com/default.aspx Should I incorporate code that "redirects" traffic as well? Or is it fine with just the relevancy tags? I apologize for such a long post, but I wanted to include as much as possible up-front. If you have any further questions... I'll be happy to include more details. Thank you all in advance for the help! I greatly appreciate it! F7dWJ.png dN9Xk.png dN9Xk.png G62JC.png ABL7x.png 7yG92.png

  • We recently disallowed a wide variety of pages for www.udemy.com which we do not want google indexing (e.g., /tags or /lectures). Basically we don't want to spread our link juice around to all these pages that are never going to rank. We want to keep it focused on our core pages which are for our courses. We've added them as disallows in robots.txt, but after 2-3 weeks google is still showing them in it's index. When we lookup "site: udemy.com", for example, Google currently shows ~650,000 pages indexed... when really it should only be showing ~5,000 pages indexed. As another example, if you search for "site:udemy.com/tag", google shows 129,000 results. We've definitely added "/tag" into our robots.txt properly, so this should not be happening... Google showed be showing 0 results. Any ideas re: how we get Google to pay attention and re-index our site properly?

  • I will begin creating custom landing pages optimized for long-tail keywords. Placing the keywords in the URL is obviously important -- Question: would it be detrimental to rankings to have extra characters extending past the keyword? I'm not able to use tracking code, but need to put an identifier in the URL (clp = custom landing page). For example, is "www.domain.com/silver-fish.html" going to perform meaningfully better than "www.domain.com/silver-fish-clp.html" for the kw phrase "silver fish"? There will obviously be a lot of on-page optimization in addition to just structuring the URLs. Thank you. SIMbiz

  • Has anyone thought of or created a algorithm or Excel function that uses the results from the Keyword Difficulty Report percentage of difficulty and SERP ranking analysis set against potential client's own OSE rankings to come  up with an estimated SEO pricing tool?

  • On OSE, I am comparing two websites(A and B) and one has a page authority higher than the other (35(A) vs 36 (B)), but all the linking metrics are in favor for website A except for the linking C block (A has 11 and B has 12). The website B is ranked in page 1 for couple competitive keywords whereas the website A don't show up in the search at all. Why is that? Does B have better content and is more kw focused?

  • My web host account allows me to have multiple domain names.  Internally, the first domain is the main domain, and the additional domains are virtual domains, but externally, the intent is for each domain to appear as a unique domain.  When accessing a virtual domain, the server first processes the main .htaccess file, and then processes the .htaccess file for that virtual domain.  I'm sure this is a common setup, and this is not unique to my web host. Due the main .htaccess file, references to virtual.com are rewritten as main.com/virtual.  The web pages are displayed correctly, but of course, this rewrite is not what is desired.  What is the common solution?  For example, is there a conditional rewrite rule that says ignore the rest of the rewrite rules in this .htacces file? Best,
    Christopher

  • Hi, This is happening with a brand new site. We have created sitemaps and submitted them to Google Webmaster Tools. GWT says sitemaps are ok, "x" number of urls submitted, but no urls indexed. When I check in Google with site:domain.com I see that many of the urls are already indexed. Why this discrepancy between GWT and reality? Thanks for your time!
