Examine the impact of paid search marketing and its relationship with organic search.

  • Has there been a chance in the adwords quality score/review thing recently? We have noticed our score up and competitors down by quite alot and wondered if there had been an update perhaps?

  • Easy one for someone I'm sure, but I can't figure it out. In Adwords under campaigns "Widget" I have ad groups "Blue", "Green" and "Red" each with 3 ads in them. How can I produce a compared report on cost per day of each ad group. So I want something that looks like 1st     2nd   3rd    ...
    Blue    £12   £14    £9    ...
    Green  £8    £11     £5    ...
    Red      £9    £22   £16   ... Possible?

  • Hi Mozzers- I have a client who is interested in running a PPC campaign. We are all setup to go...Here's my dilemma. The client provides moving services - household and commercial. I'm torn whether or not to launch the campaign during the holidays. Pros: We're not paying for impressions so it won't cost us any more $$. Cons: It probably won't show the best outcome over December - clicks/conversion. Thoughts? Pull the trigger and launch or wait until January? Thanks!

  • Hello Three days ago launched an AdWords campaign (text ad) designed to bring people to my site (www.quipeutlefaire.com). I've been tracking the visits using Google Analytics and I find  that 67% of Paid Traffic visits are new visitors (see attached image). I find this very weird, I was expecting that people who come to my site through adwords to be completely new visitors (100% instead of 67%) . What's happening? are people using my ads as a sort of "bookmark" to come back to the site? Thank you for your help gsqMj.jpg

  • The SEOmoz PRO tool shows how keywords rank in the organic part of the SERPs. Does anyone know if there is another tool out there that shows the same thing for ranking in the ads section of the SERPs? Also, does anyone know the winning lottery numbers (any lottery will do, I'm not fussy!). Thanks Neil

  • Google's policy is to allow other businesses to run PPC ads against your business name, even when trademarked, so long as the ads don't include the trademarked name. At least that's what I have experienced and read online. Source: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/AdWords/thread?tid=55e2b4bf90ae9585&hl=en Why do so many national brands have no PPC ads showing on their names in Google searches? http://www.google.com/search?gcx=c&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=best+buy http://www.google.com/search?gcx=c&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=victorias+secret http://www.google.com/search?gcx=c&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=office+depot And so on. Smaller brands, even when trademarked, are awash in competitors targeting their names: http://www.google.com/search?gcx=c&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=nally+used+cars http://www.google.com/search?gcx=c&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=la+jolla+cosmetic+surgery+centre Consider these two hotels: http://www.google.com/search?gcx=c&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=ritz+carlton+new+york http://www.google.com/search?gcx=c&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=hotel+3030+new+york There are two slightly different questions in play here, as I have clients I'd like to better protect against this type of PPC poaching: So, are there any different policies at Google Adwords RE: national brands and having competitor's ads show on their names? How do the major brands block the advertisers on their names? Thanks!

  • HI, I am trying to find out what percentage of people click on organic search results on Google versus the percentage of people who click on advertisements. I have found many references online to studies that supposedly say 70-80% of clicks go to organic results and the rest go to ads, but I have never seen an actual study claiming this, let alone a recent one. Can anyone help? many thanks in advance, Annemieke

  • I'd like to add PPC as a service for my company. However I'm at a loss as to how to charge for it. I've received cold calls from those "SEO guys" charging $200 for PPC services. But I doubt that they're very profitable or even ethical. For you PPC guys, are you billing hourly on top of the campaign, and how are you outlining this for your customers? Thanks!

  • Hey Mozzers - i was hoping to have a discussion with you guys on conversion rates and would love any feedback on comparative metrics. I plan on keeping my client anonymous and feel free to do the same if you would like. Lets start with some background. This client is an online retailer selling golf training ads, the products range from $20-40, he is based out of the US and this site is targeting consumers (B2C). So far i have assisted him with some site analysis and setting up some pay-per-click campaigns. I feel like his site is doing pretty well conversion-wise but i have little experience with conversion metrics with ecommerce (mostly just lead generation, etc). Here is a quick break down on channel conversion rates: PPC: 0.8% - 1.7%
    Organic: 6.8% - 15%
Direct: 6.2% - 13% His overall site conversion rate is between 2-3% So my question is to you guys. Is this average, above, or below in your past experiences? Based on my research a site conversion rate of 2-3 is pretty good for ecommerce, however i felt like my PPC conversion rate is kind of low. Thanks for the insight - Kyle

  • While performing keyword research around the term "windows", I noticed the keyword "windo" gets 18,000 global monthly searches with .23 competition. Why is this? Do y'all think the Google Autofill and Instant Search features affect reports generated by using the Google Adwords keyword tool? For example, if a user starts typing a search query only to find the site they were looking for before they finished typing the search query, does Google count the partial keyword the user never finished typing into the Adwords Keyword report? I've always wondered about this. Sometimes I find it tempting to attack a misspelled keyword because of the massive search volume and low competition for that keyword. I realize that many consumers may not be very good at spelling, and this may reflect a large search volume towards a misspelled keyword. On the other hand, I see this trend of high volume, misspelled keywords many times while performing keyword research for a variety of clients. Thanks.

  • Sup people, Check this out, I found a keyword from the search query report in Adwords, its had over the last month 120,000 impressions and its long tail ish (4 words). Now when I check the keyword tool it says less then 10, when I check Google insights nothing. So I check if EMD is free and it is, so now im really interested! Speak to Google account manager about it he says yeah its super weird, checks account to make sure its not coming from display network and it isn't, so we add the keyword from search query report as a exact match and let it run, this is the second day, yestarday when we added it it done 4000 impressions, today so far its done 500. Whats the score, does it sound like it is doing the traffic or do you think its some sort of bug in Adwords as other tools (keyword tool, Google insights) dont show the same result. The only thing I can think of is, its just kicked in on Google suggestions but not 100% other then that I don't know.

  • Hey There! So I've been trying some FB PPC ads. I recently learned I needed to use Google's URL builder to add the appropriate tracking fields into the URL (source, campaign, etc). The FB ad link now uses a custom URL with all the correct parameters. Now what do I do in analytics?  Do I create a filter?  A goal?  Getting a little dizzy going in circles with google analytic help, and I'm hoping someone here can direct me. Thanks! -Dan

  • Let's say I am targeting a keyword "Blue Widgets Cityname" with an AdWords campaign. My SEO landing page is coming up in position #6 in the organic results for this keyword. Because I have my website in the organic search results, does my quality score automatically improve? Conversely, my quality score could go up because the organic search results facilitate a higher CTR for both the ads and the organic results. However, I am wondering if there is a quality score algorithmic component that automatically makes my quality score go up simply because the same domain I am targeting is in the organic results.

  • Google adwords have banned my adwords because my personal blog post is a "bridge" page http://firstconversion.com/the-pasty-shop-is-not-a-fast-food-chain/ Can anyone explain how this vanilla wordpress blog is a spam bridge page? They give me 3 options to rectify this, none of which make any sense To comply with our policies, the options below are available: Option 1: Refine your web page so that it contains a substantial amount of
original content. This content should be related to your ad text and
should stand independently of the links on your page that redirect users
to other sites. This includes any affiliate links on your site. In
addition, the site should have an overall unique look and feel. Examples of original content include, but are not limited to: Tips and information for consumers considering the product or service Competitor pricing and feature comparisons Unique and informative reviews and customer feedback Links to relevant articles This content shouldn't be derived directly from other sites or a parent
site. - the content is 100% unique, written by me Option 2: Redesign your web page to offer multiple, competing offers from
different companies for related services. For example, a web page
promoting a specific marketing strategy book could have links to four
online bookstores from which one could purchase the book. - theres nothign to do with services offfers, or competitions, or any type of monetization Option 3: Link directly to the end site, using the appropriate Display
URL.  - there are no end sites Cheers Stephen

  • We already do our PPC campaigns with an agency and we're looking to create another campaign. They told us that the amount of traffic around our campaign would allow for about $2-3k spend per month, possibly with some additional funds placed into display ads. For this campaign, they have proposed a setup fee of $2k and an increased management fee of $750 -- is this a reasonable price?

  • I am trying to figure out an issue with Google Analytics. What i am stumped on is I see traffic from AdWords coming in (accounts linked) and I see new v returning user. Does the return visit still show even if a user came back in via direct or organic? Or is it that these return visits are clicking on the ad again to come back as visits and clicks match in the reports?

  • Hi, Need some advice follow Mozzers (not sure if that is the correct term). Most of my adwords are SKU numbers - in fact I have over 40,000. These all point to the correct product page which works well for English customers.  We do a lot of trade internationally so language is important, unfortunately I do not have the resources to have each product page in a number of different languages (other than google translate plugin which isn't that good). So what would be the best alternative. 1. Adwords in the customer language which direct to English pages - with the option to use google translate. Higher click through but less conversion. 2. Build landing pages in the customer language for a range of parts i.e. tractor parts from John Deer. The customer can then send an email for a quote or go to the english page 3. Send a 'Learn English in 30 days" book with every order. Thanks for the help

  • I am starting up an Adwords campaign that is set to run in the Display (content) network only.  In the past I have meshed search and content together, but after reading Brad Geddes book I see that I need to separate them. I can't see my quality score for my keywords - it just has a dash in place of QS.  Is this normal? Additionally, I can't see how much I am paying per keyword. I only have one text ad and it is still pending approval.  I have several image ads that have so far had a good CTR. I'm assuming that I can't see QS because my text ad is not running yet.  But, if this is the case, then how do you optimize your campaign for image ads?  I'm currently paying about 45 cents per click.  (Previously when I had a poorly optimized quickly thrown together campaign I was paying twice that), but I believe that I could get this down significantly. Any help is greatly appreciated! You guys rock!

  • I'm not sure if this new but I noticed it today: Some of the ads that are displayed on top of the SERPs have a title, and then their web address, separated by a vertical bar. For example (see image): Coffee Beans Online | CoffeeBeansDirect.com The same ad, when displayed in the side bar (see 2nd image) doesn't contain the web address. I expected that because if you count the letters in the ad, including the 'coffeebeansdirect.com' it exceeds the amount allowed for a google ad. My question is: How did it get there? There's no room to distinguish between top ads and side ads when you write a new a new ad in adwords so where did it come from? Plus, notice that both CoffeeBeanDirect.com and ROASTe.com use caps that are not used in the green link at the bottom. How did Google know to present the url that way? 549sR 4tAnb

  • Hey all, I have a certain format I want to follow on my text ads across several ad groups. I deleted all the past ads and only three ad groups remain with ads that follow this format. When I hit add new ad group, the ad come pre-populated with the text of a now deleted ad and I cannot for the life of me change it. I would love for one of my active ads to come up as I only have to change one name and one number in each ad. How do I control what that default ad is? How can I make it stop being an ad I have deleted. Please help!

  • I'm working on a PPC campaign for a client who provides a luxury service. He has very little search volume in general, and there's one product that has no volume at all. I'm wondering if it's worthwhile to run a campaign for this product using the general keywords. I estimate that 95% of the population has no intention of using our service and can't afford it even if they did. For example, say we're a concierge doctor service. When people search for 'medical doctor' or 'medical treatment' they are looking for doctors, and we probably could help them, but they won't want us when they could go to the doctor's office down the street and pay a fraction of the price. Obviously I'd tailor the keywords so it would be as relevant as possible. Yay: If my ads are clear, then whoever clicks them is interested in my product, so my money is being well spent. I'll just have a very low CTR. Nay: Spend the money on advertisement tailored to the target market, both people with existing interest, and those who would want it if they knew we existed. Yay or nay?

  • My client  nor I received any warning.  We even had a google adwords team optimize the account and my rep does not yet know the reason for the ban.  Not sure if its related but their google organic rankings dropped significantly at the same time. https://adwords.google.com/support/aw/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=164786 Any advice here? Do these Questions get indexed by google?  I will ask my client if I can disclose the domain. Is there any way around a permanent ban? They were spending 50K per month.  Is this enough to have any clout?

  • I've inherited an Adwords account with a few years' worth of history.  The account has changed hands a lot though and there's a lot of clutter and confusing account architecture (confusing and redundant campaigns, thousands of inactive long-long-tail keywords for every match type, etc.). I have a new architecture/strategy in mind but I'm unsure if I should start a new account from scratch, pause 90% of things and start some new campaigns, or delete a bunch of stuff permanently and start some new campaigns. My fear with the pausing option is that I'll have to wade through a bunch of clutter in my daily management and reporting - I like to keep things clean.  My fear with deleting is losing data - I'd like to be able to always look back at how things were.  And my fear with the new account from scratch method is losing whatever account/campaign quality score or historical value the account has built over time and the logistics of having to stop the old account to create a new account.  Can you even have 2 accounts with the same domain or would I have to delete the old account before launching the new? For all my past PPC accounts, I started them more or less from scratch so this is new to me.  Any advice/insights would be most appreciated. Thanks! Jeff

  • example of negative keywords: -$40 driving lessons -35 dollar driving lessons The driving lessons I'm selling are $55 an hour, so I obviously don't want unqualified leads chewing through my budget when they clearly don't want to spend $55 on a lesson. I already have the price mentioned in my ads, but I want to negative out the dollar amounts because people are still stupid enough to click without reading the ad. Any help will be appreciated! Matt

  • Hi mozers, I have a new client who contacted because his organic traffic dropped all of a sudden from 5000 visits per month to 300 visits per month. I have been reviewing his website profile and there are several reasons that take me to beleave the agency that managed his account until 3 months ago, was doing PPC to show improvement in the orgranic (SEO Service) traffic. 1. The Website was showing traffic for several highly competitive keywords 2. Most of the traffic 95% was driven to the home page with several groups of keywords 3. The website has just a few external links with anchor text not related to keywords sending traffic. Is anyone familiar with this type of practice? Thanks in advanced.
