  • I am working with a local service company. They have one location but offer a number of different services to both residential and commercial verticals. What I have been reading seems to suggest that I put the location in URLs, Title Tags & H1s. Isn't it kind of spammy and possibly annoying user experience to see location on every page?? Portland ME Residential House Painting Portland ME Commercial Painting Portland Maine commercial sealcoating Portland Maine residential sealcoating etc, etc This strikes me as an old school approach. Isn't google more adept at recognizing location so that I don't need to paste it In H1s all over the site? Thanks in advance. PAtrick

  • Hi Guys. Just wondering about this idea that links from Charities are particularly good.  I've heard people say that links from .org sites are particularly strong.  But anyone can get a .org domain, it's just that charities tend to use them more often.  Right? I just don't get the logic. Can anyone give more detail about this?  Is it a myth?  Is there quality info on this topic I can check out? We're working with several charities at the moment, and they all seem happy to blog and link to us...so I just wanted to know a little more. Isaac.

  • I came across an article online (not Moz) that says adding the full url in a menu is a Google standard.  So when you make a menu link you put "www.example.com/page" instead of "/page". What are your thoughts on this? Any real reason to? Y840pbN lrwZPDj

  • Wondering if anyone has experienced 0 data in their Google Search Console (Search Analytics) and found possible solutions to retrieve data? We have a few clients who, prior to the update to Google Search Console, were getting data regularly in terms of the Search Queries report, but ever since the update to Google Search Console, they are no longer receiving data. As an FYI, both the www and non-www versions of the website are verified in Search Console and the XML Sitemaps and Robots.txt files are clean, tested and working fine. Any insights or experience of sites showing 0 data in Search Analytics? Any possible solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Hello! I am the Moz Analytics product manager here at Moz, and I want to let you know about a change that is coming. Brand and Mentions is being retired
On August 20, 2015, we are retiring the Brand and Mentions feature in Moz Analytics in order to focus our efforts on features core to search marketing. Don't worry though, you can still use Fresh Web Explorer to access the same data instead (more below). Why?
When we first launched Moz Analytics in 2013, one of the goals of the application was to allow you to track the visibility of your brand and how it relates to your branded organic traffic and direct traffic. However, since then, a couple of things have changed: (not provided) for Google, and now Bing, have meant that it has become almost impossible for us to accurately estimate the amount of traffic that has come from branded organic keywords. We had to adjust product direction based on this. We have learned our Moz Analytics customers are still more passionate about our core SEO features (rankings, links, traffic and crawl) than they are about Brand & Mentions. Unfortunately, it didn’t evolve as we intended
While other tools and features have seen significant iteration and improvement over time, Brand and Mentions has not. We no longer feel it is the quality we owe our customers, and recognize that Fresh Web Explorer offers better functionality. A retirement benefit, if you will, is that we will be able to focus time on innovating our other core SEO tools. Fear not! Fresh Web Explorer gets you all the data you need!
If you are a regular user of Brand and Mentions, don’t worry – You can still get all of the data in Fresh Web Explorer; a searchable database of millions of recently published pages and articles, which is updated every 4 hours. To learn more, visit the Brand and Mentions page for any Moz Analytics campaign. Now there is only one place you need to go to find mentions data. We have also increased the number of Fresh Web Alerts you can setup from 10 to 35. What Brand and Mentions users need to know A small number of customers will be impacted in the following ways: If you have a custom report setup with Brand and Mentions data, this data will disappear from reports published after the feature is retired. You don’t need to do anything, this will happen automatically. Fresh Web Explorer allows you to see historical data for up to 30 days, whereas Moz Analytics showed saved query history longer. To see trended data for longer than 30 days you will need to export it periodically. OK got it! What should I do now? If you were not using Brand and Mentions, then this change doesn’t affect you.  If you were a regular user, you’ll need to move your queries to Fresh Web Explorer before the shut-off date: Visit a campaign and use the link at the top of the Brand and Mentions Overview to learn how. More questions?
Please feel free to post comments and feedback below. If you would like help migrating your data, use the Help button in the bottom right of your screen to chat to one of our Customer Success team members. Thanks! Jon

  • If we want to create a blog to keep in front of our customers (via email and posting on social) and the posts will be around 300 - 1000 words like this site http://www.solopress.com/blog/ are we going to be asking for a panda slap as the issue would be the very little shares and traction after the first day or two. Also would panda only affect the blogs that are crap if we mix in a couple of really good posts or would it affect theses as well and possibly even the site? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi! I've been quite a long time trying to find a solution to the html structure of a webpage that I'am auditing right now. But I need your valuable help! The problem is the following: Actually, they have different sections inside. The structure is something like this Masters - Degrees - Programs - About us - News And if you go to the Masters Section you will find something like this Masters Master number 1 in Tourism (brand.com/master/master-number-1-tourism) Presentation
    (brand.com/master/master-number-1-tourism) Objectives
    (brand.com/master/master-number-1-tourism/objectives) Professional opportunites
    (brand.com/master/master-number-1-tourism/professional-opportunities) Faculty
    (brand.com/master/master-number-1-tourism/faculty) Qualification
    (brand.com/master/master-number-1-tourism/qualification) Financial
(brand.com/master/master-number-1-tourism/financial) Master number 2 with a long name Presentation Objetives Profesisional opportunities Faculty ... Master number 3 in Sports and so on The Degrees section, has inside exactly the same structure with the same names. My doubt is related with the use of h1 tag What would be the best h1 strategy for each content page? Each master has 6 pages (presentation, objectives, faculty,...) For page Objetives,
brand.com/master/master-number-1-tourism/objectives If I choose to use as H1 just the word Objetives, what will happen is that I will have a lot of pages (one per master, degree or program), with the same H1, because each master  will have its own page Objectives. If we have 10 masters + 10 degrees + 2 programs y will have 22 pages with the same H1 Objecives If I choose to use as H1 the following: "Objectives of the Master Number 1 in Tourisim and so on with long name" it will be difficult for the users to visually see the difference between the different pages. for instance Objectives of the Master Number 1 in Tourisim and so on with long name and Faculty of the Master Number 1 in Tourisim and so on with long name because they only differ in one word. What do you think of this solution? Objectives Master Number 1 in Tourisim and so on with long name is it correct to do this inside the h1? or would you use combinations of h1 and h2 like these
    h1: Objectives
h2: Master Number 1 in Tourisim and so on with long name would be this appropiate?

  • I have a client that is OBSESSED with KWP ranking (don't go there...I know) This client offers multiple services, dog boarding, dog grooming, dog training, dog daycare and dog walking. Essentially these are our focus.  She ranks on page one for all of these words (locally of course) BUT she wants to rank in positions 1 and 2 for all of these words. Here's my rub, with her limited budget, we focus on 1 word (and associated long tails like "dog boarding in the south loop) and it takes a couple of months to zoom up to positions 1 or 2 (not counting map pack....she wants ORGANIC) While we're focusing on this 1 word, the others maintain their ranking or slip a few spots (like from 6 to 😎 Conversions average about about 1 a day, organic traffic is roughly 1000 hits a month. In your opinion is it better  to split this focus between the 5 target words every month, more slowly building ranking, but maintaining it for longer periods of time.  Or do it the way we have been chase dog boarding, then chase training, and so on. It just seems like we are CONSTANTLY chasing something while something else falls. Thanks Tracy

  • Hi, Bit of an unusual one this, so please bear with me. This site http://www.hayesandhurst.com/ is being tracked in Google Analytics but we're unsure as to how. To the best of our knowledge we haven't inserted the tracking ID into the theme options or the tracking code into the source - and yet it appears to be tracking successfully! I did send some instructions to the client to set up the Analytics account in their name - I fear they have added the code somewhere to the site, but we cannot see where! Perhaps via Google tag Manager?? As I say, an odd one this, but if anyone can shed any light on this mystery i'd be hugely grateful. The tracking ID is UA-64505394-1 for the record. Regards,

  • My client has recently built a new site (we did not build this), which is a subdomain of their main site. The new site is: https://addstore.itelligencegroup.com/uk/en/. (Their main domain is: http://itelligencegroup.com/uk/) This new Addstore site has recently gone live (in the past week or so) and so far, Google appears to have indexed 56 pdf files that are on the site, but it hasn't indexed any of the actual web pages yet. I can't figure out why though. I've checked the robots.txt file for the site which appears to be fine: https://addstore.itelligencegroup.com/robots.txt. Does anyone have any ideas about this?

  • Hi guys So ive been helping a local business out with their Google my business pages, they have them set up over several different accounts, which I dont think is a problem, however am sure its more helpful having them under one login, does this matter so much ? They are one company, however the titles for their business listings are all different, they have stuck some keywords into the business titles and the area, I am guessing the title for the different businesses in different citys should all be the same just the company name ? is this correct as they need to be consistent dont they ? As i am sure WH smiths for example all their business listings in different citys are just WH smiths and not with some keywords after each different branch ? I just wanted to check this up, and make sure I wasnt messing up someones listings lol !! J

  • Hi, I'm dealing with an ecommerce client who sells furniture. Each category landing page has a menu on the left hand side that allows you filter by colour, material, brand etc. Take the www.example/double-beds page, as an example: if you select 'Wood' from the 'Material' filter, the URL changes to www.example/Category/Browse?PageNumber=&ViewAs=&ObjectEntityKey=1916&PageSize=15&SortBy=&filterOptions=47&filterOptions=47 and all the wooden double beds are displayed. As this new URL contains some of the same products/content as www.example.com/double-beds, where do we stand from an SEO/duplicate content point of view? Are we at risk of a duplicate content slap? Cheers, Lewis

  • If I use unique content written from writers & post it to good sites (free blogs, bookmarking, directory, articles sites, etc.) having nice good cache, good PR, different IP's do i still have a chance of get hit by Spam actions of google? Planning to do like just 30-50 a month all with unique content or say 1 unique content then re-written & used not more than 3 times. If not this then What else would you suggest? One more thing to add up, like i have 1000+ pages out of which i have like 80-90 pages that matters to me (important pages) then how do I spin the anchor text between all the pages. Should i spin them between 1000+ pages or use only 80-90 IMP pages. If the content is 300 words let say then how many anchor tags should i have?

  • I'm trying to optimise my ecommerce site's category/navigation structure so that it is: Intuitive for human users Keyword optimised, and Minimises duplicate content penalties Here is my dilemma. Let's say my site sells widgets. Some people search for widgets according to size (big widgets, medium widgets) while others search according to colour (green widgets, blue widgets). My keyword research suggests that I should target some keywords that relate to size, others that relate to colour, yet others relating to material, etc. I figured that I'd use one of these taxonomies as a category system, then set the others as filter elements. So my site's main navigation would say "Big Widgets | Medium Widgets | Small Widgets". If you click on any of them, or if you click on the "Widgets" supercategory, you'd reach a filter function allowing you to see only green widgets, or only plastic widgets, etc. So far so good - from a user perspective. The problem with this method is that Google isn't going to index my filter results. So someone Googling "green widgets" or "plastic widgets" is unlikely to find my site, even though I have plenty of green/plastic widgets that they could have filtered for. My next thought was to add some of these filter urls to my main navigation so they will be crawled. My filter mod generates urls for each filter (eg mysite.com/category?filter=k39;w24). So now I have a flashier navigation menu where clicking "Widgets" will pop out a panel allowing you to browse by size or by colour. I don't know whether users will find this helpful or redundant/confusing, but at least Google can see my filter urls. But I've run into two more problems. My filter results aren't really pages, so I can't set things like H1s, meta descriptions and so on. There's very little I can do to keyword optimise them. Further, I now have duplicate content, because the same widget can show up under multiple filter urls. And so I'm stuck here. I've thought about creating custom pages for each target keyword and manually listing products that pertain to each keyword. This will allow me to optimise the pages, but it's a lot of ongoing work (I have to update them whenever I get new stock), and I'm not sure my visitors will appreciate this - I suspect they would rather just browse/filter/search through my site than have to click through pages of manual curated content. I'd appreciate any thoughts or advice on figuring out my category and navigation system!

  • Hi, what is the best way to identify audience overlap? I ask because I manage a collection of sites that I believe serves the same audience and feel that we may be cannibalizing our marketing efforts. Site A - Is our supplement/vitamin store and receives around 38% of our total traffic. Ultimately, we want people to funnel to this site as it is where they would be converting obviously. Site B - Is our expert/spokespersons site and receives about 40% of our traffic. Site C - Is a specific weight loss brand created and endorsed by our spokesperson and sold on Site A. This site gets around 16% of our traffic. Site D - Is also a specific weight loss program also endorsed by our spokesperson and sold on Site A. It gets the remaining 6% or so of traffic. Now, all of these sites have a fairly similar focus and I can probably come up with several arguments to either keep or do away with them. I'd like to be able to look at analytics data though, that could help in making that decision. Ultimately, sites a and b would be kept regardless but I have always wondered if we would be better served by consolidating sites c and d into a.

  • We are wanting to refresh old posts on our blog and schedule them to get “republished” to the home page of our blog on a future date. However, when we edit the “Published” settings date and set it to a future date, the post gets removed from the blog and put back into a “Scheduled” status. Many of these posts are “evergreen” and bringing in traffic so we don’t want to have them get removed from our site. So to recap, we need the ability to be able to reschedule already published posts to get “re-published” back on our home page without having them get removed from the site. Does anyone know of a plugin or solution to this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi Moz Community, I've been trying to figure out how traffic from Google Maps (and G+) shows up in Google Analytics and am struggling to find a good answer online. If someone finds a business through Google Maps and then clicks on the website in the Maps listing, does that show up as a referral from Google Maps? Our site shows virtually zero traffic from Google Maps even though we have a number of listing. Two related questions: if someone clicks through to a G+ page from a Maps result and then visits our website from the G+ page, does that show up in Analytics as a referral from G+? Is traffic from Google Maps or G+ ALSO counted as organic traffic? (Would it be possible to accidentally double-count a visit as both organic and a referral from Maps/G+? Thanks everybody!

  • I inherited a website that has a host of issues. I set up Goal Conversions for lead generation and am getting this URL listed as a Goal Completion Location /l/24672/2014-07-31/b4dg5 I can tell it is a date but have no other insight into what or where this page is. Does anyone have experience with this and can offer a fix? A related question is how can I find the URL that triggers the Goal Conversion. I tried editing the goal but it doesn't show the URL anywhere. And the Goal Completion Location is sort of a misnomer because it lists the URL prior to the completion. Thanks!

  • Hi, I've recently marked up some Events for a client in hope that they'll appear as rich snippets in ther SERPS. I have access to their Google Search Console so used the Data Highlighter facility to mark them up, rather than the Raven plugin available for WordPress sites like this. I completed this on 10th July and the snippets are yet to appear - I understand that this can take time and there are no guarantees - but as a novice it would be reassuring if someone can advise that I have done this correctly. We did incidentally resubmit a sitemap after completing this task, but I'm not sure if that makes any difference. I've read that it's the structured data testing tool that I need to use to test my markup, but when I input the urls below, the tool doesn't tell me a lot, which either suggests I've marked it up incorrectly, or don't know how to read it! http://www.ad-esse.com/events/19th-august-2015-reducing-costs-changing-culture-improving-services/

  • I do not know how to easily explain that but I will try 🙂 We are running the yellow pages in our country, where most (all) of the companies are listed. Each company has their keywords that are used in our search. All of those search keywords are indexed by Google and it goes something like that domain.com/search/keyword So far this page only lists the companies that match the search query. So that's not much content. I'm thinking about adding a sentence that would go something like this:
The search query lists the companies of our country that do KEYWORD. So far COUNT was found. That seems pretty short and I am not sure if that does a lot of help for Google. But I cannot think of more text. Any ideas? Or should I give up on the idea of adding anything at all?

  • Since, Social media signals are taken into account for SEO activities. Do you think that Social Profiles account content will also be taken into account? Or is it that how many fans, share, likes a profile has gets into account for SEO activities. Like more number of fans the higher the social value for SEO? Secondly, if someone re-tweets or shares. The content gets duplicated into number of profiles re-tweeted or shared? & what we even do is copy content from other pages, do slight changes & post on our pages? Do you think it will affect the SEO part?

  • Hi, I would like to know if there is any update about the best practices for the homepage title tag. I mean, a couple of years ago, it was still working placing main keywords in the homepage title tag. But since the last google SERP update, the number of characters that are being shown were reduced, and now we try to work with 55 and 56 characters. That has reduced our capacity of including many keywords on the title tag. Besides, search engines are smarter now to choose the correct inner page to show in SERP. But I am wondering if the Homepage Title should have a branded orientation or should include main keywords, cause it is still working that strategy. I would appreciatte any update in this issue. Thank you!

  • Hi there, I’ve got a question regarding SEO and Geotargeting The following is my business scenario. My business is based in Spain and its goal is to sell a product for both foreign students from all around the world that come to study here in Spain and to Spanish students as well. Considering this scenario and the fact that for the resources I have at the moment I can just maintain two versions of the page I decided that the best option would be to establish two page versions – one in Spanish and one in English both with very different content. NOTE – The main goal is to rank for different keywords according to the language. Therefore, the content will be different because I’ve conducted two types of keywords semantics strategy using Adwords Keyword Planner - One with Spain as country and Spanish as language, the other with Spain as country and English as language Ideally the Spanish version would serve results for users searching in Spanish (Spanish, Mexican, Argentinian, Peruvian..) while the English version would serve either users searching in English being English their native tongue (American, British, Australian) or users with a nationality that doesn’t belong to a country where English is the official language but still (I suppose) search in English (Chinese, Brazilian, Swedish, Japanese…) I thought that the best option would be to create two different and separated domains www.example.es and www.example.com Indicating in GWT that for both the domains the country is Spain. And then I would use the following hreflang attribute to indicate the language. For www.example.es And so on…. While For www.example.com And so on…. My question is, do you think this configuration is correct for my needs and goals. Do you have any suggestion? Can you see any pitfall? Thanks a lot for your help!!!

But my concern is all pages which are ranking good had all the keyword in a single statement like. Get ABC pens, ABC pencils, ABC colors, etc. at the end of a 300 word content describing ABC. Whereas the pages which dropped the rankings had a single keyword repeated just twice in a 500 word article. Can this be the reason for a massive drop. Should i add the single statement like the one which is there on pages ranking good? Is it good to add just a single line once the page is indexed or do i need to get a fresh content once again along with a sentence of keyword i mentioned above?
