Chat through link building best practices and outreach techniques.

  • I learned this morning in our Google Webmaster Account about a website has 30,746 links to our website. Both our website and their site present information related to plastic materials, so in essence they complement one another. However, is having that massive amount of links from one site to ours a bad thing and should we use Google Disavow? Also, they have a PR3 while our site is PR5 (not sure if that matters much).

  • hey guys, i understand that google has made algorithm changes for article writing in that only one link is allowed now per 500 words. would this include the "author resource" box if you don't place links in the body? any suggestions would be great: Due to the latest changes in Google's algorithms, regarding the proportions between the length of the content to the outbound links, ArticleSlash's requirements are changing effective immediately. • - For articles with up to 500 words, we will allow only one hyperlink • - For Articles up to 900 words - two hyperlinks • - For articles with 900 words and above - three hyperlinks Short articles with many outbound links are running the chance to get into Google's spam filters, which is why we are implementing this change, effective immediately.

  • Hi all, We have a couple of seasonal websites (Artificial Christmas trees). Now, its fairly easy to develop good content that people are interested in when the season is approaching, and even easier mid season. However, this somewhat stalls when everyone has had their fill of Christmas, between Jan and Sept. So, my question is, how would you suggest an approach to link building for a seasonal ecommerce site such as this? Obviously my aim is to develop links now, so when September comes, the site is up there. Thank you 🙂

  • I have heard that Press release is one of the best source for getting high authority backlinks. Can anyone tell me about benefits of paid and free services offered by PR websites like PRweb or PRLOG ?

  • Hi all, New to SEO Moz and this is my first question... I have a site that I am writing a 'widget' calculator for with the idea that the user can embed the results of the calculation on their website / blog. I currently convert the calculation html to an image and save it on the server and then also display the code for them to embed the image (including a text link back to my site). In order to try and get as many people to embed the results on their site I am not asking them to login / register on the site before they get access to the embed code. Is no login / registration the correct way to go? It means I won't be able to track if people have copied the image without including the text link. Is saving the output as an image the best way to enable the user to embed the content on their site and provide me with a link? The only alternative I can think of is to give them the html in an IFRAME code to embed it but the IFRAME would have to rank to pass on on the link back to our site. As well as giving an embed option I am also giving a 'link to these results' option in the format:
http://mydomain.com/calculator/result.aspx?ID=20 I am doing this with the result ID in the querystring) so that instead of having (hopefully) hundreds of links each pointing to a page with one incoming link I would have one page with hundreds of links pointing at it and use a canonical tag to state that all these different results should be indexed as
/calculator/result.aspx Does this sound like the best way to do it? Is it ok to use the canonical tag even though the results / page content will be different for each querystring variation? cheers.

  • We have noticed a competitor of one of our clients has leapfrogged massively in terms of their Domain Authority, Links, actually pretty much everything in the space of a year. We have been working diligently with our client building up a solid seo strategy based on content and organic link backs, but we're at a loss of how to try and explain the gains by the competitor over them. I have attached the competitor analysis from April 2012 and Feb 2013 below. Any help, ideas, conspiracy theories etc. are welcome! Thanks RQXM5Pp

  • As far as I understand it Interflora was removed from Google organic search results on February 20th. I guess no one knows for sure why they were delisted other than Google but I have heard theories such as giving flower bribes to bloggers in return for links 🙂 How sweet - and placing paid follow links inside advertorials within local newspaper sites. Whatever the reason for their de listing it seemed Google must have wanted to send out a strong message since even a branded search wasn't ranking. Fast forward 13 days to today and I now see Interflora ranking not only for their brand but also for flower delivery London etc etc... How is it possible that they managed to get back in the SERPs so quickly? Is it normal to get a penalty and be back up and running at position 1 in less than 2 weeks? Is that normal for a penalty? I was under the impression that being caught gaming Google to the extent where they delisted you was something far more serious and had much longer term repercussions?

  • Our company has a wide range of linking strategies. Currently, our SEO team members are linking to directories more than anything else. Are there any advantage to this or should they put there effort elsewhere? My views on directories: these links are easy to acquire and offer little push to our SEO efforts. It appears that Google is no longer taking directories in consideration and essentially they could be hurting our rankings. What should our company do; should we stop linking to directories all together or keep it to a minimum. Also isn't bookmarking on the same lines as directories? What is the best way to handle this?

  • I'm after a turbo boost (direct and indirect) to my site's SERPs. How beneficial is URLwire.com? Anyone here used it? Worth $495? Given that Matt Cutts has said links from PR sites don't pass link pop, would URLwire fall into this category? (I'm aware the idea is also to generate backlinks from other referring sites). Thanks

  • Essentially there is an old page that has been the target of an old school link building agency. There is a 301 re-direct from the old page to the newer version. if I drop the 301 re-direct and update our sitemaps. Will those links be removed from our profile? The old URL passes nothing in actual value & a link building campaign has been running on the new page for over a year.

  • I have developed some micro-sites for a client.  The micro-sites are on their own root domain and are only associated, through links, with the client's main site.  The client just added an infographic to their site and I want to embed it on the micro-sites.  If I am going to embed the image on all the micro-sites that were developed do I need to use a rel canonical tag so it is not seen as duplicate content?

  • So, our website has a pretty profound collection of inbound links- which no one has really been taking care of the past 10 years. lol. Our users love us and they love to talk about us every chance they get. Which is great, except that I am new to the company and I am trying to sort through our links. Lots of them come from foreign forums and some are even in "hacking" forums, because some of our "not so great" users abuse our service. So, how am I am to tell what links and sites are good vs. bad? I have found some that are on old industry related link sites, I should definitely try to get rid of those right? Thanks in advance for the help and sorry if I am being unclear.

  • My URL is: http://bit.ly/hBJAG4 Just been hit with an unnatural imbound links penalty and don't know what to do. I haven't done any link building work for the last 3 years other then creating an infographic at Christmas that was incredibly popular: http://bit.ly/14lao4G I have 0 paid links and I have never spammed a blog or forum. The only thing I can think of is back in 2006/2007 I was directory crazy - I got listed in all of the (what I thought at the time) were good quality paid directories - could this have come back to haunt me? Why do you think I have just been penalized now when these directory links have been there for years? Should I start getting rid of the directory links? - they did cost me a lot of cash. Can any of you spot any other links that could be seen as unnatural? Thanks to anyone who can help in advance

  • Hey guys, One of our clients has just reported that they've received an email from WMT stating they may have "Unnatural Inbound Links". I've done some research and found this link which certainly seemed applicable; http://searchengineland.com/how-to-remove-your-unnatural-inbound-links-130073 As you can imagine, going through all of the client's backlinks may be a time consuming process so I was just wondering what the time frame for these Google warnings is like? Because we've got the email now, does it mean that a bad link was built fairly recently? Or could it have been a number of months ago? Also, what are people's experiences dealing with these type of emails? Is it just a case of sifting through links and then re-submitting to WMT? Thanks

  • Hi all, 3 of my websites have received a massive hit from Penguin/Panda due to exact phrase links. I have had all the links changed so that they are completely different, and submitted a reconsideration request to Google. • Am new to SEO so please be kind. I am working on link building (amongst other things) and notice that Google Webmaster Tools displays different links (and with different values) than Open Site Explorer. Some high value links which show up on Webmaster do not appear on OSE and vice versa. Which is the most accurate?

  • I was answering some questions on the Apple support website because I like to answer questions for people there and I decided to check out my profile. I noticed that at some point I inserted my website in a field they provide called "homepage" then I viewed the source and noticed that it is a "dofollow" link. So I have decided to start targeting questions that relate to my niche. Can even these links help my rankings? Since my username links to my profile page which has the link to my website?

  • I answer a LOT of questions here on SEOmoz. Don't forget that you have access to a lot of tools here like the Beginners guide to SEO http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo. Piece of advice from me to you... if you are trying to rank higher by doing something that can be easily done (like paid links, directory submissions, article submissions, and even crappy guest blog posts, blog network for backlinks), there is a HIGH likeliness that you will unintentionally hurt your site. Ask questions here in Q&A before doing something stupid, but 1st read the beginners guide.

  • A national networking company charges its members, say, a few of hundred pounds to become part of their network, which involves offline networking events and online in forums and a directory. All the links of the directory and forum sigs etc are all do-follow. While it's not just a directory, how beneficial a link is this likely to be?  The site itself has a DA of 60 and a PR rank of 4. 1k likes on their cnnected FB page and 21 likes on the G+. At the networking meetings they tell new recruits that being a member gives them a very valuable backlink and everytime they participate in the forums they get another do follow backlink.  Ive checked and they are dofollow. Is this likely to be a great value link?

  • Hello I have a question about anchors. I have done all my own seo over the last 3 years, with tools from various sites. I had an seo audit done about 1 month ago and was told my link profile was very natural. They had one recommendation. To go back over my link profile and ask  some webmasters if they would change the anchor from the name of my site or my url to a more seo friendly phrase. This seemed logical. I never did a lot of anchor text just name or site or url. Anyway, over last 4 weeks I have messaged several webmasters and asked to have anchor text changed to something along the lines of the keywords Im targeting. Tedious task to go through all the links but I changed several anchors to what was recommended. I was also out link building at same time. These last links and I got several of them all natural links after 16 hours work days. Are all will seo friendly anchors, because as Ive gotten more experienced my links have gotten more in lines of what is "seo friendly" or at least I hoped. I asked one webmaster to change my anchor and he warned me I would be slapped with a penguin penalty and wouldn't recommend I do this. I have already done this to several of my links. Then today the new seomoz update came up and I was down on DA and PA by 3-4 points. Do these have anything to do with one another and have I been given bad advice and can I fix it if I have ? Sorry about long post just a little confused. I don't want to step into penalty land and not know I did.

  • Hello, I was wondering if you could provide some advice on which are the best Top 20 high pr web 2.0 properties for content besides wordpress? Whilst i do intend to use them to further improve my SEO campaign I also intend to use readable content, that is to say, content that i have written and i feel is worthy of being read by interested parties. What are the top 20 to look at that would benefit an SEO campaign if used correctly (without abusing or being spammy). I can see lots of crappy ones out there but they all look spammy to me and im not really liking that.

  • This has been bothering me for a long time. Our company has a sub-domain blog that gets a respectable amount of traffic but not a lot of SER. Most of our traffic comes from social shares (although we do rank really high for a few key searches). The blog manager is convinced that providing external links to additional resources or source material "dilutes the SEO juice" for the blog. URLs are provided, but they aren't linked. Attempts to sway her to the idea that external links are actually Good Things® have been stonewalled. Tell me I'm right and why.

  • Hello, I couldn't find a clear answer to the impact on SEO for a link written in this way: [" class="expert_info" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">](w</span>ww.yourwebsite.com<span style=) [Does the "return false" act as a "no follow"? I came across this in our link data in Open Site Explorer which lists these links all as "no follows." However, an engineer I spoke to said that it shouldn't impact search engine behavior. Any ideas? • Hope everybody is having a good day:). I was wondering what happens to the external link juice of a page when you redirect it to a new (and improved) url? For instance www.example.com/lowvolumesword/highvolumeword/   301 --> www.example.com/highvolumeword/ Will the /highvolumeword/ page lose a lot of  (external) linkjuice? Is it best to change the external links to the new url manually or leave them as is and let the 301 redirect take care of it? Is it possible to say that no more than x% of your linkjuice will be passed through via a 301? I hope im making sense here and am looking forward to your reaction. Thanks in advance,

From an  SEO perspective is it worthwhile creating a blog that is related to your particular industry and then  only including links back to your site. Also is there any way to upload ,articles etc automatically to the blog to cut down on the people hours involved in updating content?

  • What are your thoughts on SEOs and web designers putting their own links in the footers of client sites. For the sake of argument, lets assume that the client is happy for the link to be there. I'm referring to the SEO merits of the link being there from an 'irrelevant' website. My belief is that this goes against what Google is looking for and that these are irrelevant links and likely to be picked up and penalised.  That's what I believe! However, I see lots of sites offering SEO services that have dofollow links from their client sites, using exact match anchor text and they are all ranking highly. Is it just a matter of time before Google sniffs them out and penalises them for it?  Or should I be going through my client sites and adding myself a dofollow link in the footer? (with their permission of course). The highest ranking sites in any UK city do this.  If you search SEO Manchester, SEO Leeds etc and find the top ranking sites and check them out on opensite explorer, they are all using a disproportionate amount of dofollow backlinks form client sites.

  • Is it better to have a blog under your main website's domain or should the company's blog have its own domain? And if the blog is on its own domain, do links to the main site look good or bad to Google? Thanks! (And please feel free to add any other related advice you might have...)

  • I get it, a truly authoritative source will not be able to control the exact anchor text that others link to it with. Google is trying to deliver the most authoritative source, so non-exact anchor text is more likely a good option for them. This makes total sense and I have been varying the anchor text of my blog posts. But this begs the question: How am I supposed to know I am increasing my rankings for the high volume key words in my industry, and not leaving it up to Google to decide which keywords are most important?

I have ran it through 2 plagiarism checkers and they both said it was 100% unique. I have tried contacting the site directly about this but as of yet have had no response. This will be on the site that received the testimonial, possibly linked from an our customers page. I want to make each customer profile testimonial into a separate page. • I have noticed that more and more of my competitors are removing the links page from their sites.  Either that or they are hiding them. I suppose it makes sense because all the links on my page http://www.kerryblu.co.uk/links-7-w.asp are just links to sites that are linking to me.  Supposedly there is no worth in this but I'm just worried that I will lose a lot of links if I delete this page and this may effect my currently crappy rankings for the worse. What do you think?  Keep the links page or delete it ?

  • Hi Guys, I have few doubts running in my mind on directory submission, do you think it is still a valid practice in link building?. If your answer is "YES", then please correct me.. How submitting to directories is a natural link practice? According to Google, links should not be purchased, it should to be created naturally, but if you see, a lot of high authority directories charging amount from people to index links, why Google not stopping those directories (I mean penalizing) and stopping the people who are trying to get indexed by paying. According to me directories holds only bunch of links to some external domains (I hope I am not wrong), then how submitting to them can bring rankings to me?. Sorry, if I sound stupid in any of my points, but expecting some good answers from you folks.. 🙂
