Category: Link Building

Chat through link building best practices and outreach techniques.

  • I have a start-up website. It's a niche market that's not all that competitive. I'm trying to get going with some basic link building, and I'm trying to focus for the time being on some recommended directories: BOTW, yahoo, business.com, etc. I already have a regular BOTW directory listing, accepted a few days ago. I'm wondering if it's worth also getting a BOTW blog directory listing? So two BOTW listings, the first pointing to the homepage, the second would point to the blog. If there is meaningful link juice to be passed, would there be an advantage of having two links? Or will the one I already have suffice? Also, since the site is new, I only have a few blog posts. Is BOTW likely to reject me because my blog is too thin? The posts I have are content-heavy (1000-2500 words per entry), but there's just not a large total quantity yet. Normally I wouldn't consider it, but they're having a cyber-monday sale today where it's 50% off the regular price, so it makes the decision easier. Thanks.

  • I've been trying to get backlinks for one website for the past 2 weeks and it's proving almost impossible. Initially I drew up a list of websites that would be suitable to have a link on and tried e-mailing a contact on each. However, it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Most are coming back saying I can add some content but they will charge. However, we don't have a budget. I've analysed competitor backlinks and they didn't reveal anything interesting. The website doesn't have a Twitter account. So I can't look for links that way. Another problem is that the website has a very niche audience and probably not the most active online. Does anyone have any other tips that would help?

  • Let suppose i have one target page i.e video and one web2.0 blog or wordpress blog. If i keep on adding new articles on web2.0 and in each article i add one back link(with different anchor text) to my same target page. Is this create red flag in google as i will be using one domain? Do I need to keep my web2.0 like bloggers.com and weebly or wordpress blogs relevant to one topic to increase the relevancy score. If i try to keep them relevant my back links to target pages from one domain increases again. I kind of stuck up in this loop help me out!

  • As per on page optimization report i can only get A grade for 1 keyword. In one title i can add only 1 keyword, so how come i rank and do perfect on page optimization for more then one keyword.

  • Good afternoon Mozzers. I have a discussion based question and I'd be interested to know your thoughts. I currently implement a content strategy where we create a series of high value How-to written articles, relevant to our audience and then work at getting them placed on multiple high value websites. I have just been offered an opportunity with a PR6 domain to create a similar series of content but place it all on their site with links back to ours through a dedicated section. So my question is would I gain more value from small amounts of great content in lots of places vs. a lot of great content in on place? Effectively 1 link from 20 sites vs. 20 links from 1 site.

  • Getting confused about what is helpful. I have a few questions. Is it beneficial to link to other sites like wikipedia from our main url or our wp hosted blog? Does that help our SERP? We have just built a new sitemap for our site, which is good, we didn't have one before. Should I still do internal linking? 3)If I can get a person with another blog to link to us, would it better to get it in a post or on their main page with a button or text listing? Thanks everyone:) I am just trying to figure out how to spend my time wisely here.

  • I am getting this at the bottom of Open Site Explorer. I have never seen this  message before. "Why does my number of inbounds links listed not match my total links count? The listed number may be slightly different because we only show 25 links per domain (so that you see a variety). Additionally you have 18 links from no-indexed pages. Unfortunately, we can't get info for those links." Did SEOMoz change something? If I look at a site, SEOMOZ's OSE doesn't show me all the links it can find anymore? It only shows 25 max???

  • In SEOmoz, in a campaign we set up, it shows 600+ Linking Root Domains, but in OSE it shows 300+ Linking Root Domains- quite a difference. Any help gratefully received. Thanks.

  • Directories are no longer as effective anymore but I still think this is a good deal especially for a lifetime link at 50% off. This is good for those that were contemplating this but did not want to spend $300. Hope this helps anyone that was interested previously. "Sneak Peek: BOTW’s Biggest Sale of the Year! Save** 50%** on all BOTW submissions on Cyber Monday. Promo Code: CYBER50

  • We are a web design and hosting company http://www.spiralsites.com But when we register domains for clients, or they take email only or a name is parked we have it using a holding page  which can be seen as follows: http://www.jcevents.co.uk/ is this a good thing? Bad thing? Could it would it should it benefit our rankings? Should we do more to make it look less like our main site and actually try to use it better to help rank our other services pages?

  • Is it worth it to get a link from this site since it is a search engine and not really relevant to my site? If so how can I get my english website included? I have submitted it multiple times with no success.

  • I f i purchased a domain with keyword another one of my sites targeted and redirected it to that site are there benefits in doing so? & as long as the domain contained the keywords would it matter if the domain name contained another word?. also would it be better to put just a few articles on the site and then point keywords in the article to the niche site?.

  • Hi, i always used pingler.com to drive traffic to my sites but for some reason in the past couple of weeks i cannot get onto the site, i think there could be something wrong with my ip address, not sure. I have spoken to virgin nearly everyday and all i get off them is to turn off my internet for one week to get a new ip address and see if that works, now there is no way i can turn the internet off for one week. So i am now trying to find another service as good as pingler.com as i cannot see anyway of getting this problem sorted unless if someone has any ideas. I would like to know if anyone uses services that offers what pingler.com offers and if they could please list them here many thanks

  • Why Domains BackLinks to  my sites are less than link in google webmaster tools or in the other software? In google web master tools i find 323 domains backlink, in other online software the number of domain links is similar. There are great problem when i must download the backlink to upload in other seo software for different analysis, example buzzstream Thank You.

It's been 2 months & the links still show up in Open site explorer, & their website is still kicking butt. How long will it take for the links to be unassigned for their profile?

  • Hi, As I am creating a completely new website for my employer (she will have zero incoming links, even the URL will be different), would it be advantageous to allow follows to the other internal pages from the home page, but disallow follows on all other internal links on each subsequent page? So, for example each page will have this many internal links: Home page: 5 (all 5 service pages) Recruiting: 1 (home link) Services: 1 (home link) Talent Assessment: 1 (home link) etc. Does this make sense to bolster the home page until we can get some links coming in?

  • Hi all Could do with a second opinion on this one if anyone has a moment please. Recent Google updates have targeted overally optimised backlink profiles as they are clearly for seo purposes and not natural. The question I have is how does this relate to an ecommerce website? If I sell 'blue 1980 aged cheese' (I know nothing about cheese so perhaps not the best example!!) and I have a url on my shop domain.com/store/blue-1980-aged-cheese with the product name as the page title along with the domain name.  If I were to get backlinks pointing to this page using the anchor of 'blue 1980 aged cheese' (and other variations of that, blue cheese, aged blue cheese etc) would this be considered to be too optimised? Given the page is about this item then surely it could be considered natural that people link using the product name, as well as using the site name and the domain url Any thoughts please Thanks, Carl

  • Hi everyone, In order to increase link juice for relevant interlinks, wouldn't it make sense to attribute no-follow to the following interlinks: About Us, Sign In, Join Us, Terms of Use, Privacy Policy, Security, Contact Us, Home (assuming brand name / logo also links to homepage), and any page where there are 2 or more links directing to the same page. Thank you, Kristian

  • Dear community, Just a quick question: Would you consider a directory as this one whitehat or blackhat SEO? http://mixyellowpages.com/cncat_add.php You can add link to 50 web directories. - No reciprocal link. - 100% approved within 48 hours. - Do follow link. - Get one way link from quality sites. - Pay only $ 15 No monthly fee. Our SEO-agency is using these kinds of directories, so I just wanted to make sure, that this is a) Whitehat-SEO and b) will not harm our rankings. Thanks,
    David

  • If yes, is it because you believe it is still worth the cost for the link from this particular directory due to the prohibitive costs which deter low quality sites, it's review process,  the high DA, or other? If you no longer submit to it, why?

  • Hi everyone, I run a job board (job website) - www.hawaiijobengine.com - and on the homepage I have 50 job categories ("Accounting / Finance" is one another is "Admin / Clerical" etc). I write your typical 400 word article length, giving career insight. Questions: should I 70% of the time try to use exact keywords in the article and link to those categories and other 30% of links should be to more specific search terms like "accountant in CITY NAME". The 50 categories already have decent rankings already and those are the once I am trying to push higher. Obviously, I also want weaker pages (more specific search terms) to rank higher too. I am writing genuine and original content, it is just a matter off whether I should adjust my keyword focus. On average how many different interlinks from a 400 page article is acceptable. Range of 1-3, with 2 on average sounding about right? Most of the times I have only 1 or 2 interlinks from each article, but once in a while I want to link 6-7 places within the article. I don't know if that is appropriate. thank you, Kristian

  • hi, I hope some of you might be able to give me a few pointers here. A friend of mine has started a web hosting company in the UK. Not an affiliate but actually owns a data centre, Now he has a great deal of experience in running hosting in other countries but all his work came from large corporate companies and not from the net. The UK hosting he wants to promote from online sales as well. Now I know his site needs considerable work (http://www.cloudwebsters.co.uk) but I want to be able to give him some advice on the best ways to get started promoting his site. Obviously content is a key to success, but not sure how he can incorporate lots of content into the site as it is effectively e-commerce. Looking at sites such as UK2.net they have a lot of pages on the site but they are all minimal content. such as http://www.uk2.net/glossary/moreuk2/ which only has a couple of sentences on them. Is this really the way to go for the site, my feeling is no as it does not offer any real quality but your opinions are appreciated. Thanks Jenson

  • If I have an AU domain, will Google give more weight to back links from other AU domains in the Australian search results, or will quality links from anywhere in the world count much the same? Intuitively, you would think that AU links would be more relevant for an AU site in the Australian SERPS and Google would therefore give these more weight, but are there any good articles/research/anecdotal accounts to show this? Thanks!

  • I heard paid links are not good. My business is wedding related e-commerce.  There are some wedding directory site out there and I need to paid them in order to put my links there.  Are these directory links also count as paid links?  Is it bad for SEO?  I saw some popular wedding sites put their sites there too. BTW, is Yahoo , botw or business.com directory treated as paid link? Thanks, Hon

  • My boss is in the process of building lot of new partnerships. The goal is to increase the number of mutual referrals.  These are businesses that are not in the same industry, but have the same clients, so there is no competition. He wants a separate Partners category, landing page and a subpage for each partner. On each partner page, he wants a link pointing back to the partner company, along with some information about that particular business. In exchange, our partners would do the same- have a page dedicated to us with information and a link to our website.
By the way, this is not an affiliate program, just referral exchange program. I am worried about appearing like a link farm. Should I be?
From what I see, most partners of other companies are all listed on one page. My boss says others do this without any problems, but he is not an SEO person. What are the dangers of doing it the way my boss wants?
What is the safest way to list business partners on our website while trying to accomplish what I have been asked (or as closely as possible)? No follow links, maybe? What about the metas and titles? NoIndex/NoFollow pages?  (my boss wants these pages to be indexed). Your input is greatly appreciated.

  • I just read this article about how google views multiple versions of the same page as different pages of duplicate content. My website, www.telikin.com currently has many versions of the home page.  There is: www.telikin.com
    www.telikin.com/index
    www.telikin.com/index.php
www.telikin.com/index.php/ All of these seem to be their own URLS,   If i use the open site explorer tool to search for links pointing to these URLS, the www.telikin.com domain shows about 700 links, and the www.telikin.com/index.php shows about 63 links. My questions: Is my SEO suffering as a result of having these different pages?  Does google realize that links pointing to www.telikin.com/index.php should count towards the seo of the www.telikin.com page? If this is hurting my company's website, how do I solve this problem?  I am not versed as a webmaster, so I don't understand what the best course of action would be.  Should I request that our webmaster somehow redirects all traffic from the other URLS to the main www.telikin.com URL? Should I be using canonical tags on all important pages?  If i do, for example, use a canonical tag on the www.telikin.com page, will Google then know to send all link juice from the www.telikin.com/index.php page to the www.telikin.com page? We also have a Joomla blog that seems to duplicate pages many times over, but that is a problem that I will have to address another time. Any comments/suggestions are more than welcome. Thanks, Dave

  • Hi, My Client's Website has been duplicated, exactly the same website theme and etc. It's like a mirror site and my client couldn't figure out who duplicated his website. Actually, it has been hit by Penguin update last May and didn't fully recover yet, because of unnatural links but there's a little improvement with its ranking. I have already fix the keyword stuffed from his homepage with a link to it and the footer links. After fixing it about a week, its ranking is moving up a bit from page 14 to page 8 but it's not stable. Sometimes it go back to page 10 then back to 8. But  there still a lot of unnatural links pointing to his website using its targeted keywords to much. I guess the main issue here are the duplicate site and unnatural links pointing to his website. By the way, here's the original site of my client www.apparelus.com and here's the duplicate one www.fs-biz.info/ Thanks!

  • Knowing that pointing links to your website with only your targeted term is toxic how on earth do you defend against a third party site pointing a link to your site using the very term you dont want to over do. Put another way... imagine you have a site ranking well for say target term "cordless drills". You then notice multiple sites who you have zero control over has pointed links to your site using that target term. So my question is... "How do you block an incoming link if the site administaror doesnt head your cries to take out the targeted pharse in the link" Any insights welcome 🙂

  • I just created my first press release at prlog.org using the free account, which lets you have one outgoing followed link. Question:  Should I link to my press releases from my web site?  I made the mistake of doing link exchanges in the past, and worried Google would detect it as a link exchange.  It would be nice to link to the press releases on my site while still getting the benefits of having an incoming link from a site with PR 6. Is prlog.org a good site for press releases?  Is there another one you recommend that is free or inexpensive?  Is there any benefits to using multiple press release sites, with different content on each site? Thanks!!!

  • Hi Everyone, So I am looking into a couple of sites that we can use for press release distribution. Naturally, I am looking for sites that will improve our SEO (sites that have a high domain authority). I guess I am just trying to wrap my head around the whole domain/page authority and how it effects our SEO. So for example, I am looking at prlog.org. They have an overall domain authority of 91...sweet! Is this all I should be looking at when I am looking to place a press release, which will include targeted links using appropriate anchor text? If I drill down even further to the actual section that the press release will live on, which will be the security section of the site, the page authority is a 49. Is this what I should be looking at? Do I have to drill down even further and look at the page rank for the actual URL that my press release will actually live on? I am assuming since it will be a totally new page that the page authority will be very low. Is this correct? Should I be looking at a combination of the two? The page authority of 49 is pretty low but the domain authority is very high. What does this mean for my SEO and my links? In a nutshell I need to know what I should be looking at for SEO purposes, is it domain authority, is it page authority of the section the site will live on or is it the actual page that my press release lives on. Is it a combination? What would you do in this situation? Also, could you give me a little more insight into when a low domain/page authority can actually hurt you. What the threshold where you get no link juice or are actually penalized? Do you have any insight in the domain/page domain number that is considered not worth it? Thanks all! Pat
